On my way to the bank this morning is saw this sign Wetherspoons outside one of our local pubs and almost immediately thought of you  toothgrin.gif

I'd be all over that if they'd only open one over here! Thanks for the heads up!  I wonder how good their Fish & Chips are?  We have no place that has very good fish for a good price around here where I am.  Long John Silver's (national chain) really stinks!

It's not too bad.  Not as good as my local "Chippie" which is run by Italians, but not bad for a chain of pubs.  "Cheap and Cheerful" sums them up. I quite like going there for a Sunday breakfast as well. Reasonable food, low prices and free WiFi.  They even have copies of several of the Sunday papers.

The best fish and chips in the whole world are in Shetland.  Fresh fish off the boats and chips to die for.  Standard fare on a day out to the toon to do your messages.

The best pizza actually is in Nepal, in a cafe in Kagbeni (7 mile hike from Jomsom) made by a lovely Tibetan lady.  Funny that! whistling.gif

Sandy - Thanks for the appraisal!  I can only just resist drooling!  :drooling smilie:

Frances - Doubtless the Nepalese "really" invented Pizza (Marco Polo probably passed through there) and of course the fish are best when bought close to the dock!  I'm not likely to get to Nepal, let alone the Shetlands; but sometimes life doesn't happen as expected!  

My "best" pizza is Wheat State Pizza which is a local place (only in Lawrence thus far) but he makes it on Whole Wheat crust and you can get it with cream cheese topping or alfredo sauce as well as the regular marinara sauce and pesto sauce.  Second best is Pyramid Pizza, which still makes a good crust but used to make a better one, and serves it with little cups of honey to dip the crusts into for dessert when you've eaten the rest of each slice!

I think any place where you can get fresh off the boat fish -- you'll be eating the best fish ever.

I hate to disagree folks, but the very best fish and chips is found in Anstruther. Or as it's know locally Ainster. A fish supper to die for.

Mind you an Arbroath Smokie eaten whilst still warm off the market stall, takes a lot of beating.

What species do all these different places (no pun intended) use? Many 'shops' probably don't even know that there are different kinds of fish, they would assume there is only one kind: frozen! laugh.gif I've been told that "Plaice" is best for this dish but I think it's just a type of Flounder.

The problem with getting good Fish 'n Chips around here (mid-continent, Mississippi river town) is getting those fish to swim upriver nearly a thousand miles (it's a really crooked river!) so they can be 'brought near the boats!' But I think the "best" is eaten out of doors in temps down in the high 30's and with a very light drizzle! Almost anything warm will taste better then! yum.gif

The British take their fish and chips very very seriously.  There is even a national competition - Fish & Chip Shop of the Year

In Scotland Haddock is the most commonly used, whilst in England it's Cod.  The better "chippies" such as the one I linked to in Anstruther tend to have a bigger selection.  The same holds for "chippies" in other fishing ports.  A friend moors his yacht in Arbroath and he swears by the "chippies" there. They have quite a few Arbroath "Chippies"

They are two related flatfish but not the same species. From the Wikipedia Plaice and Flounder.  I prefer Plaice to Flounder, they do taste different. This is because they tend to live on sandy bottoms as opposed to muddy bottoms which does affect the taste.
