Having trouble playing an older Macromedia CD
« on: March 26, 2008, 08:49:23 PM »
Sneakers has an older (1997) cd that he bought at a museum exhibition (Splendors of Imperial China: Treasures from the National Palace Musuem, Taipei: CD-ROM - for the curious). He really enjoys this cd and has always been able to pop it into his G4, click the powerpc app, and run it. Now that he's bumped up to 10.4.x, it launches classic and doesn't play as nice. He's also wondering how he'll play this cd when the day comes that he has to upgrade to an iMac -- since it won't launch at all on my iMac.

The program was created with Macromedia Director 4.0.4, and so far I've not found any helpful info on Adobe's web site.  rolleyes.gif

I tried the Metropolitan Museum of Art's web site to see if there is an updated CD, and there isn't. sad.gif

Does anyone have any idea how to play this without classic and/or how to play it on an iMac?

I looked, Kimmer, but couldn't find a thing that was useful. Target still sells it...

What kind of file is this? It may have been created with Director, but isn't the output .avi or something? What application plays it on the G4?

This was created as a stand-alone player application for OS 9. There is nothing that you or he can do except write to the programmers who created it and ask them if they have plans to re-create it for OS X.
A whole lot about me: www.xeromag.com/franklin.html

tacit, is correct. It's apparently a stand alone app. Strangely, there are 2 on the cds: a classic version and a PowerPC version. Until I talked Sneakers into bumping up to Tiger, the PowerPC version ran in OSX like it's supposed to do. Neither version will play on my iMac.

Guess it's time to write the museum folks. Oh joy.

Thanks.

Too bad there isn't something like AudioHijack that can "hijack" video files. Oh well. I suppose it still plays on a PC?? (OK if you have Parallels or BootCamp with some flavor of Windoze...)

Yeah, VideoJack is what we need. biggrin.gif

It should play on our pc laptop -- but I don't know. Sneakers is the only one with a password and he hasn't tried it. Too bad I *don't* have a password to get in there, cuz I have several recipe cds that were OS 8 or pc and I could get in and retrieve all the files.

I'll be passing the suggestions along to Sneakers tomorrow. He's still not feeling grand today. sad.gif
