Bad DVD or 'other' problems??
« on: April 05, 2008, 04:51:23 PM »
Just got my Leopard DVD and when I put it in my iMac G5.... nothing!!
I can hear it 'searching' but never displayed anything on the screen...  Tried rebooting w / "C" key held... also nada... just the fans revving due to lack of system instructions...

I'm stuck.... any and all suggestions are welcome.

Bad DVD or 'other' problems??

Have any other DVDs to try? Might help to determine if it's the drive or the disk. smile.gif Or a Mac firned with a DVD drive?

There are drive cleaner disks (dry and wet). I've used one many years ago. All I can say is it didn't do any damage. I wasn't having any problems at the time so I can't say it fixed/cleaned anything. dntknw.gif

Bob, if your iMac will boot from a Tiger DVD fine, then you probably have a bad disk. As Jim says - if you have another Mac/friend with Mac to try it on, that would help.

I have contacted Apple Support  whistling.gif ... and they and I went through a number of things... (Many of which I'd already tried)...
Trying to boot off the DVD, "C" key,  'option' key boot, single user boot...  NADA, ZIP, etc., etc...

Put the tiger DVD in and it recognized it right off, SSOOOO don't think it is the DVD drive.  The drive does A LOT of searching when I try to use the Leopard disc...  I've got as far as it bring up the 'restart your computer to begin the install'.... but then when it self-boots... it can't recognize the DVD and spits it out....

Apple is sending me another DVD, via 'herd of turtles' shipping.. wallbash.gif

Bad news is that I put the DVD in my wife's G4 Macbook.... and it recognized it right off... sweatingbullets.gif so don't know what that means... maybe her DVD drive is 'more forgiving than mine??!?!?

In my case it would confirm that my wife is more forgiving than I deserve! Thank goodness! clap.gif wub.gif

In your case, it may mean that the new disk still won't work. But you should still be able to install Leopard using the G5 in Target mode while connected to the MB. I think, anyway. Or maybe just move the external drives to your wife's machine and install Leopard that way. So many choices, so little time! Either of these possibilities could be done immediately, without waiting for the 'turtles' to make it to your door.

ABD... good ideas all.... but prying the Macbook from my wife's grasp may be more than I want to engage in at this moment... Devilish2.gif

Maybe tomorrow when she is 'otherwise engaged' and I am left here to 'my own devices'... toothgrin.gif
I can then bring her Macbook down into my 'lair' and have at it...

Will let one and all know of the out come..

Thank you all for your suggestions.

BTW, I suppose you have seen the thread started by Mayo that covers what you are thinking of doing, assuming you can get the G5 to use the DVD...He seems well satisfied with the approach he used and you are considering. smile.gif

Abd, yes have been following that thread also...

Have managed to get iLife 08 and PSE-06 both installed.... no problems with DVD drive... so am convinced that the Leopard DVD is 'hosed' somehow wallbash.gif

Will need to read all of Mayo's thread and associated links when the 'herd of turtles' delivery of my Leopard replacement gets here.

I assume your G5 is newer than her G4? It could be your laser/mechanical mechanism is closer to or farther from the tolerances allowed and can't read a disk that may not be perfect. I believe the DVD laser beam is much smaller than for a CD. And I'm sure that DVD 'tracks' are closer together than a CD's. One 'bad' DVD does not a broken DVD reader make. dntknw.gif tongue.gif

Glad you could work around the problem, anyway. clap.gif

Yeah, I wouldn't trust it either. If it's only working most of the time, it won't work when you really need it. :murphy:
