Annoying software - a rogue's gallery

Nobody is immune: among the rogues: Adobe Reader, Apple (iTunes...software update), Windows update, RealPlayer (got that right!)...and my personal pet peeve: Flash. Their drubbing made me laugh:

Flash
There's nothing wrong with Flash, provided you don't use it to construct web sites where people want to find information, navigate easily or do anything beyond passively consume exactly what you choose to give them in exactly the way you've decided.

There's also nothing wrong with using it for a splendid splash screen replete with movies, sound and animation — if you don't mind frustrating, annoying and possibly even driving away people who might, just might, have something better to do.

In fact, Flash-based web sites are quite possibly one of the most useful pieces of network technology around. Like heroin or microlights, they ensure that those who think it's a good idea aren't around to annoy us for too long.

Absolutely right on with the Flash comments. There are several company sites that I've tried to navigate to find out about products (not computer products, I'm talking baking supplies, cookware, home decor, etc) and I can't get past the dang flash stuff. Worse are the baking sites where the recipes and such are flash and you have to print them -- and on my printer the font size comes out to around a 5. Or maybe it's just smudged ink. I really couldn't tell you.

And talking of Yahoo. Please stop.

Oh yeah. Please.

Interesting gallery. biggrin.gif

A friend who is a web developer says that people had ought to test their websites on old and weird hardware/software before calling it good.  He always runs it through Safari, Firefox, IE, & Opera on two generation old boxes like G4's and Pentium III's to see how it looks and feels.  I'm sure this is probably above and beyond what most people would do but it is a humane and kindly act as far as I'm concerned!

MOST all software is annoying to me; almost a definition there!  laugh.gif
