Sharing data files between boot and unmounted volumes?
« on: May 21, 2008, 09:16:53 PM »
Currently, I am booted into 10.5.2. However, it  sometimes is necessary for me to boot into 10.4.10. What I want to do is share data files between  the two volumes irrespective of which volume is booted.

Specifically, I use Quicken (Mac) for managing my finances. What I would like to do is, say, enter transactions in Quicken files residing in the current boot volume and have the same data be entered into Quick data files on the unmounted volume.

What I have been thinking is to set up a "sharing" folder in both volumes where Quicken data files reside. Then, when I switched boot volumes, I would like to access Quicken and have it open the data file in the shard folder. I would then be able to add data, switch to a new boot volume and see the data that was added. In other words the Quicken data file is synced between the two OS'.

Does this make any sense? Have I just confused you and me? If  it does make sense, how do I go about implementing this process.

Super hanks,

Sharing data files between boot and unmounted volumes?

I agree you'll definitely have to turn on File Sharing in both Pref Panels.

What I don't understand is why the other volume is "unmounted." Sharing won't be possible without another volume is mounted. Or, when you say "have the same data be entered into Quick data files on the unmounted volume." you mean the non-booted volume?! And both volumes are actually mounted.

In any case, I have no idea if Quicken will allow this constant swapping of the file storage site. That location is set in the apps prefs. But I don't see any problem in over-writing the 'out-of-date backup file' on the non-booted volume with the new data on the booted one. I am making a big assumption, BTW, that you actually have two copies of Quicken, one on each system/volume. Otherwise, I think you'll need to change the prefs everytime you want to save the work. wallbash.gif

I also don't understand the need to use Quicken while booted in two different Systems. I think I would get confused myself trying to remember which data was the newest! I'd just do my Quicken work (and I don't do that more than twice a week) on only one System and copy/backup the backups on the other volume. dntknw.gif

mm,

If you re-partitioned the drive with a third partition for file srorage,
then you could put your Quicken files in a folder on that partition,
and point to those files in Quicken.

Or, would that get you into a problem because Panther and Tiger use different formatting on the drives?

Then, they would always be available no matter which volume was used to boot.

MM-

Not exactly sure how you would do it on OS X....but I'm guessing you could mount the volume with Disk Utility and then copy back and forth or read and write data from those partitions as long as you have the permissions to do so.

I have my winders partition mounted on my desktop and if I boot winders I use explore2fs to view my ubuntu partition and copy any files I need to use for that time.....

I have two partitions on my panther install and it mounts the os 9 partition when I boot, so I'm a bit confused as to why the other partitions aren't getting mounted......

You might try here.

Take care,

Chris

You can never copy data to an unmounted volume, by definition. "Unmounted" means "not being accessed by the computer." Do you mean to say unbooted volume?

Quicken does not care where its data files are. You can put them anywhere you want to. You can put them on the 10.5 volume somewhere, and read them from the 10.4 volume if you like. It makes no difference. As long as both volumes are mounted--that is, they are both on your Desktop--it doesn't make any difference which operating system you're booted in.

My baad!  wallbash.gif I should have said "unbooted" instead of "booted. After listening to all of you, I decided to keep Quicken files in 10.5.2 volume. This problem arose when I went to Office 2008 which turned out to be a disaster for me because of the lack of VBA capability. So, whenever I need Word or Excel, I boot 10.4.10 and use Office 2004 that works just fine.

Perhaps, I should dump 2008 (as some suggested) and install Office 2004 on my Leopard volume. The question becomes will 2004 work with all its bells and whistles including VBA when installed in a 10.5.2 volume?

Thanks much for your help in getting me straight on this,

Office 2004 should work fine in Leopard. I'm still running Office X in Leopard and it's fine too...STILL haven't had time to install either 2004 or 2008, both of which I've had for some 4 or 5 months now!!
