Thanks for the heads-up.

We get emails every week claiming "invalid login attempts", sometimes to groups we have never even heard of, but sometimes the spammers get lucky and hit on one we do use. Our bank for some time has issued regular warnings and asked for any phishing emails to be forwarded to their security department. It also emphasises that any email it does send will have no links and will be addressed to us by name.

Yep, still the two main rules in handling e-mail:
1. Never click on any link.
2. You no name me, me no read you.
3. Always use the SPAM filtering in any email program you have. If it has none, get a different program.

The link you put here is the real Careerbuilder link. What does the link in the email actually go to? I guarantee it's not careerbuilder.com.

This is one way that hackers trick the gullible; by making links that look like Web addresses. You cn make a link look like anything, such as

elephant

Click on the word "elephant" and you will go to Google. But you can put anything in place of the word "elephant." Check this out:

http://www.yahoo.com

Click on the link and you'll go to Google, not Yahoo. The link in your email may have said "http://www.careerbuilder.com/Share/Login.aspx" (which is a perfectly fine and safe URL), but that isn't where it went.

Can you post where it actually went? In Mail, control-click on the link and choose Copy Link. I'd like to track it down.

You can also simply look at the raw source of the document to see what is really there. A good email program will always show you what is actually in the link by simply hovering the cursor over it. Even the venerable, aging Eudora can do that.

Remember, email is only text. If you turn OFF html, you can read it that way. Just like you can read a web page, assuming it's not a bunch of Flash junque.

Phishers/SPAMmers/etc. depends, mainly, on the human/viewer tendancy of expecting something or more for nothing or less (some call it greed?). Break that habit and protect yourself from the vast majority of email 'attacks' on a Mac. PC users may need other habits broken!
