2 Cents worth: Just for drill I launched my Iphoto which is 4.0.3 (please hold the laughter) and found the following.

1: All the photos that were originally loaded from the camera(s) export as .jpg

2: Importing a photo from the desktop to iphoto without the .jpg works just fine

3: Exporting that same file goes to the desktop WITHOUT the .jpg

I see from the original post that it appears the file in question originated from a scanner.  Any thought as to the possibility that it was where the problem originated???

The Macintosh disk directory and filesystem allows "metadata" to be connected to a file. You can put, in the disk directory, a Type and Creator code. The Type code tells Mac OS what kind of file it is. The Creator code tells Mac OS what program to use to open the file.

So the Mac does not depend on having the three-letter code at the end of the file's name. If the three-lette code is missing, the Mac can still look at the Creator code to see what kind of file it is.

Windows systems do not allow for attaching this kind of metadata to a file. If Windows does not see a period and a file extension, Windows has no way to figure out what the file is.

Yes - I know that's what is supposed to happen, but MY version of iPhoto refuses to import a photo with no extension. Nobody has been able to explain that - nor does anyone appear to be able to duplicate this situation. I tried it with several photos too - ones that were already in iPhoto (exported out, lopped off extension) and photos elsewhere on my system. In the XMP core properties a test photo is listed as an image/jpg WHEN it's got a .jpg extension. I cannot open it in Photoshop if I remove the extension. Tried yet another photo - this time opening it in Bridge. Fine as long as it has a .jpg extension. Remove that, and there is a thumbnail of the photo, but in the metadata, it's listed as a binary document, and it won't open in PS.

For Daryl and those of you who have tried the importing to iPhoto - do you have your system preferences set to show file extensions? Just wondering - because it could be that the extensions are simply hidden on your systems if you have this preference unchecked. I have mine set to show all extensions - when I remove them, they're really gone, not hidden.

Paddy: This probably sounds like "Joe Dummy"  but I cannot find anywhere in the "system prefs" anything to do with file extensions (where do it be??) huh.gif . In Iphoto when I export there is a box for "use file extensions" and it is checked.

Further. I discovered that if the photos have been named and imported from the desktop there is no .jpg.  If imported directly from the camera it is there. Moving a named photo to the "attachment" box in Entourage adds the .jpg.  Adding the same attachment to "mail" (which I normally do not use) places the photo directly into the text.

More confusion huh????

Daryl,

Apparently, the embedding vs. attaching photos etc. is a long-standing and well documented issue with the Mail app. This embedding issue can be a problem when you think the recipient may want to forward your mail, but does not wish to include what ever it is that you "embedded".

One solution is to first compress the photo or whatever. Then, it will always be an attachment rather than be embedded.

Another solution, is to install Mail Attachments Iconizer $14.99 (US) shareware, (unlimited test). FWIW, I have been using it for a few months and found it to be rock solid and problem free.

I assume you're doing this on hard drives that are formatted Mac OS, not UFS or Windows?

Correct.

And now it gets ever stranger....I CAN lop off the extension of a jpg on my MacBook Pro and do whatever I want with it - including import it into iPhoto '06. It's just on the G5 that I cannot. Both computers are running 10.5.2, both drives are formatted Mac OS Extended, though the MBP has the GUID partition map of of course. Beginning to wonder if there is something very odd going on with the G5 drive, though not sure what it might be, as I've had no other issues. Think it might be time to run some diagnostics, though likely won't be able to do that until next week some time, as we're going away for the Canada Day long weekend.

Any other ideas as to what might be going on?

BTW - text files reacted the same way to having extensions removed - could no longer open them with Word etc.

Go to menu bar under Finder/Preferences/Advanced. You'll see a checkbox to always show file extensions.
