Big push for .me domain names
« on: June 02, 2008, 04:06:06 PM »
I'm sure you've read some of the rumors last week about the possibility of Apple upgrading .Mac and starting to use ".me" instead. Here are some more useful domain names you might want to consider:
    mini.me
    free.me
    hit.me
    pay.me

My whole take on this is summed up with this suggestion: monkeythrowingchairsatiphone.me

Just something catchy about that one...Thinking.gif laugh.gif

And, of course, the Spanish 'Love' site; beso.me/mucho! wub.gif

And the site for most arrested crooks; who.me?

Seems a little late for the not so fleeting "Me" generation...

So, Apple is using Linux on its servers! eek2.gif

It appears that I need to ad some domains to Safari's list of approved sites. I tried a half dozen in the list using command-click. They did open in a tab or more exactly the "Safari FAILED TO LOAD" info was in each and every tab...

Those aren't registered domain names in the Netcraft list - don't know what they're doing in that list. They're all subdomains of me.com - which apparently is now owned by Apple, though that is difficult to actually trace. They DID modify the record on May 29 of this year, but the me.com domain has existed since August, 1994. Generally one cannot register (or even search for) a domain of less than three letters. They are allowed with .com, but were all taken years ago. They're not allowed with .org anymore - when any existing ones expire they cannot be re-registered. This is one of the few WhoIs sites that does let you search for a two letter domain name. (A very, very useful Whois, BTW - I use it all the time) http://cqcounter.com/whois/

Domain   ME.COM
Registrar   NETWORK SOLUTIONS, LLC.
Registrar URL   http://www.networksolutions.com
Whois Server   whois.networksolutions.com
Created   23-aug-1994
Modified   29-may-2008
Expires   22-aug-2015
Status   clientTransferProhibited
DNS Servers   NS1.MARKMONITOR.COM   64.124.69.50
NS2.MARKMONITOR.COM   64.124.69.52
NS3.MARKMONITOR.COM   217.68.151.240
NS4.MARKMONITOR.COM   217.68.151.241

The .me top level domain belongs to Montenegro. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.me - but they're milking it for all it's worth! It's a mere $50/year for  one of those domains. dry.gif I think I'll stick with .com, thank you very much!

When I read that it 'belonged' to "Montenegro" I assumed that meant the <country>. All countries seem to have specific domains ( .uk, .ca, .ru, etc.). Perhaps that is that why it can have a two letter name?

Jim, I wasn't referring to the TLD name (top level domain - the part after the dot) but what is sometimes referred to as the a registered domain name - like "techsurvivors" or "amazon". The country code TLDs are mostly 2 letters - but the registered domain names that are two letters are either all gone long ago (me.com was registered in 1994 - the world wide web as we know it now was in its infancy) or prohibited by some TLDs, like .info and now .org.

I'd love to know who owned me.com and how much Apple paid to get their hands on it. I'm sure it wasn't cheap!!

Some examples of two letter registered domain names that do exist and are in use:

rr.com (RoadRunner), ts.com (Tickets - UK outfit), mm.com (Minnesota Micronet...no, not the candy!), aa.com (American Airlines, of course)

There are also a lot of two letter domains that resolve/redirect to company names - they're acronyms of the company name. Eg: ms.com resolves to morganstanley.com, rs.com to rocketsoftware.com, etc.

And there are some that go nowhere - ua.com - and darned if I can figure out who owns it. It doesn't conform to Network Solutions' Whois Policy...(you just get Google if you try going there) Bet United Airlines would have liked to have that one! Now, of course, domain names are the least of their worries!

There are also probably a few "parked" - like bb.com, which is owned by an internet parking company called Thought Convergence. Obviously they want so much for the name that nobody has been willing to pay. And there are a few that some of the big boys probably wished they'd snagged - xm.com is NOT owned by XM Satellite Radio - it's domain is xmradio.com

Anyway, it's interesting - just like 3 or 4 letter domain names, the 2 letter domain name sites run the gamut of nonexistent (but the names are owned - they're ALL owned) to full-fledged major business sites. All the two letter domain names were first registered in 1993 or 1994, with the odd exception (xa.com wasn't registered until 1997 for instance).

OK - now I'll go and do something a little more useful!! wink.gif
