Installing program
« on: August 03, 2008, 06:02:29 PM »
My wife has a Windows only program that she needs to use for a new job. So I installed Parallels and Windows XP onto my iMac.  Things went well with the Parallels and Window install but ran into a problem running her work program.  It looks like the work program installed but when I go to run it I get a message in Windows XP saying "Could not execute the external program".

I would delete and reinstall the work program to try it again. Windows is notoriously picky about removing files correctly or messing with the registry so follow the proper procedure for deletion. Hopefully the software has a removal option.

Also be sure there isn't a problem with having authority to run the program, like running something that can only be used by an Admin under XP.

If you get the message again, here is a link to how to view reports on such events in XP.

This is an error in the Windows problem. Common causes:

- The program did not install correctly and needs to be re-installed.
- The program has a copy protection system on CD and the CD-ROm is dirty or scratched.
- The program has copy protection on CD-ROm and the CD-ROM is not in the drive.
- The program references a Web site or loads some part of itself from a Web site, and the Web site is busy, overloaded, or down.

I would suggest that if you re-install the program and it still gives this error, talk to the company that made the program.

Both of you, very good advice!  Tacit, I would say your last cause listed may of been it.

My wife was given a CD with the program on it.  The CD is what was giving us the problem.  She found the same program on the companies website and downloaded it.  The downloaded program worked for us!  I noticed during installation it updated itself which makes me think that was the problem with the original attempt.

Thanks
