Everything you need to know about USB 3.0

Interesting point is made in the comments - the 10X USB 2.0 speed is only for DUPLEXED transfers - (ie: info going in both directions) - which most USB transfers are largely not. Therefore the actual speed increase is more in the order of 5X current USB 2.0. Certainly not as impressive a jump as USB 1.1 to 2.0., but welcome nonetheless.

Don't expect to see any USB 3.0 devices or controllers out until very late 2009 or 2010.

Meanwhile, Firewire speeds are also increasing:

Yeah, but you Mac users are not Universal enough! tongue.gif FW costs too much! $25 instead of $10! No wonder Macs cost so much. Now shut up while I stick my head back into this sand...

As long as both options are available on a Mac I'll be happy.
I won't buy anything without firewire, well if i don't count the XO, going forward.

I've been quite content with firewire backup drive which seem to have an edge over the USB option plug on my lacie. Knowing that faster drives are coming, I'll put off purchasing anything new until the dust settles.  Quadl option drives are the way to go, they cost a little more but often come in handy. I found this one on Amazon a while back and discovered that it cost less than a comparative package at OWC. http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-301109U-FireWi...l/dp/B000UPTCRC  wink.gif

I'd prefer to get the case and put in my choice of drive but 4 ports is nice.  smile.gif

Yes the four port is nice though I haven't used the eSATA yet, it performs as advertised. This was my first real large drive, prior to it I only had 250gig's or smaller. I like the drive, it's fast and not loud as some have said, at least mine isn't. The fan is quite as well.

I looked at enclosures at OWC before I bought it and the cost was about the same but the lacie seems to have more options. I've been using Lacie drives for a long time now, none have failed or given me any cause for concern, so I continue to have a good amount of confidence in their performance. I have a few OWC drives, and an Neptune enclosure that i used to use for swapping drives out. I would buy a drive only from OWC and pull the full one for storage and replace it with the new drive. With the 750gig which is closer to 700gig, I can probably extend my swaps for almost a year.

I do wish they would upgrade Silverkeeper backup software, it has served me well and i would like to bring it with me when I move to the next OS.
