Mac Startup Sound

In searching for an answer to a friend's loss of her startup sound I came across this.

HeHe......I use 3.5 mm plug, cut off of headphones from JetBlue Airlines, inserted in the audio plug and no longer hear a thing. When it's finished starting up I pull it and all is Swell.

Isn't there an AppleScript around that runs on Shutdown/Restart that lowers the Sound volume to zero and then returns it to whatever you normally after Startup? I only Restart once a week, anyway, and have powere speakers plugged into the iMac. OTOH, I seldom take it to the library! And I'd love to have that sound file, just for a joke! Would be a great April Fool's trick for a 'friend's' Mac! Once, anyway!

Actually, I think we lost that "Shutdon Items" capability in OS X:(

BTW, Edge is slow compared to 3G!

I use Psst. You can mute or adjust the volume of the Startup Chime.

I'm using Tiger and if I mute the iMac from the keyboard before shutting down, it starts silently (no chime) next time.

I don't know if there's a link with EyeTV which I sometimes set to record stuff in the middle of the night. iMac just restarts, records and then shuts down at the time I've set in Energy Saver. Whether or not I've set it to record, though, if it's been muted the night before it still starts silently in the morning.

However, do the laptops have a mute key?

Neil, I think that should work on any Mac. It's basically all that AppleScript did back in OS 9. But back then we had both Startup and Shutdown items. OS X only provides Startup items. The advantage of the script is that one doesn't need to remember to use the Mute key. One actually need not even be present for the mechanism to work.

The other part of the 'trick' is an AppleScript that returns the sound volume to whatever is 'normal.' That part is still available in X, of course.

I suspect that someone must have written a AS or even an Automator that will run at a particular time and shut down the Mac. Before doing that, of course, it could easily turn the sound OFF. Someone needs to search for something like that. There are many who have a Mac in the same room that they sleep. Keeping the 'noise' level to a minimum should appeal to them!
