Talking about my Generation!
« on: October 19, 2008, 03:00:19 PM »
I suspect that this study is hog wallow but at study done at Dundee University posits the ability to dream in color or B/W with the type of television you watched in your formative years:

QUOTE
The findings suggest that the moment when Dorothy passes out of monochrome Kansas and awakes in Technicolor Oz may have had more significance for our subconscious than we literally ever dreamed of.

Eva Murzyn, a psychology student at Dundee University who carried out the study, said: "It is a fascinating hypothesis.

"It suggests there could be a critical period in our childhood when watching films has a big impact on the way dreams are formed.

"What is even more interesting is that before the advent of black and white television all the evidence suggests we were dreaming in colour."

I have a counter "observation" that the amount of color in my dreams seems to have a correlation with the subject matter of my dreams and the relative depth of my sleep.  I dream in either and have all of my life: a mysterious dream of a disembodied arm floating into my bedroom was always in B/W (had it a number of times) and a later one where Redi-Kilowatt attacks my uncle was in living color.  Perhaps like Scrooge it is all because of "a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato."

Any other thoughts?

dntknw.gif My dreams are in black and white. We are still using that little B&W TV I've mentioned before, but it hasn't been our primary set for 20 years.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

We didn't have a color TV til I was a senior in college but I almost always dream in color. The only rare exception is a nightmare that is too dark to really see color anyway.  wink.gif

I was just remembering the bit in the movie "White Christmas" where Bing Crosby was trying out a theory of what you dream about when you eat certain foods and then deciding that you dream about limburger when you eat limburger.

Every time I notice this thread, the jukebox in my head starts playing The Who tune by that name.

One thing I often do is take a few minutes when I wake up to try to associate my dreams with something that happened the day before. Most of the time I can see a relationship with an event or something I saw or heard in the previous day or so.  Of course my brain twists things around and makes really odd correlations and unusual stories.

Wish I could digitize my dreams. Would have enough material for plenty of movies.  smile.gif

Hmm, maybe I should suggest that to Steve Jobs. I'll bet he could come up with a new product.... iDream.
Plug it into your mind each night and review the video on your AppleTV the next day.   wink.gif
