Need a bolt hole for emergencies for next summer for my daughter.

I don't think we have any currently active members in Nova Scotia. Csonni, who hasn't been around much lately lives in Labrador, but that's only about 400 km closer than I am in Toronto (1700 km from Halifax).

jb lives in Montreal - still 1200 kms away from Halifax. Chris Kleeman in NH is actually closer than that by about 200 km.

I've spent some time there, had an uncle that farmed in Houlton me. and have a friend who used to spend time here in florida with his family during the winter months. If you like i can contact them to help you out. These folks are natives and know the region well. You'll luv them!! His daughter Kelly changed her fathers name to Grandpa G on the Forth of July 2007

She will be staying just outside Halifax, I think in Belnan, East Hants Co, Novia Scotia.

Sounds like a perfectly suitable term, considering its WW1 origins: A hole dug into the side of a trench in which one can 'bolt' to avoid 'incoming!'

No its not obsolete.  Say it at least every day - I think it's also a fox-hunting term as well.

My OH says it may be obsolete in the US, but you don't speak English anyway! (ducks, coz he said that and not me!)

Yes, the 'hole' seems to be anywhere needed, even if it's actually a 'harbor!' It's simply a 'safe' place. I'm sure most fox and rabbits keep one close at all times! And, once I confirmed its meaning, it was perfectly logical and clear, even self-explanatory! Maybe my trouble was that I had just been looking for a replacement bolt and nut...I already had the hole...

That's good enough for me! Still, I read at least one text that called, the 'bolt-hole' version, obsolete. Maybe that 'author' lives in London! Must say, I've never heard it at all, 'over here.' But this is a pretty large country... Maybe in the NorthEast or along the Mid-East coast (Virginia, North & South Carolina) where there is still a very big british language influence.
