Yes, the 'hole' seems to be anywhere needed, even if it's actually a 'harbor!' It's simply a 'safe' place. I'm sure most fox and rabbits keep one close at all times! Must say, I've never heard it at all, 'over here.' But this is a pretty large country... Maybe in the NorthEast or along the Mid-East coast (Virginia, North & South Carolina) where there is still a very big british language influence.
