What Gives?
« on: October 30, 2008, 12:45:30 PM »
What gives? Whenever I go to the MacNN.COM site, I get these ANNOYING Apple ads pop up right in the middle of the topics. See pic below. They are all the same size, but different contet.

This has been happening for several days now, and I CAN'T GET RID OF THEM.

[attachment=1096:Picture_1.jpg]

What can I do to eliminate them? I have pop-ups blocked, with a white list of OK sites. Apple isn't one of them.

What browser are you using and do you have popups blocked? I didn't get any with Webkit/Safari. None with Firefox either. Popups blocked in both.

Tiger 10.4.11, Firefox 2.0.0.15

Doesn't do it with Safari 3. Didn't used to do it with FF until about a week ago. Now does it regular.

Pop-ups blocked with White-list exceptions. Apple is not one of the permitted exceptions.

That's not a popup, and a pop blocker will not block it.

Technically, a "popup" is an ad that appears in a separate browser window, not the browser window of the site you're browsing. What you're seeing is an ad that is inside of the site you're browsing, not in a separate window; popup blockers only prevent a site from opening a new window.

The type of ad you're seeing is done using JavaScript and HTML. There's not a lot you can do about it, short of disabling JavaScript--which will cause a great deal of the Web to stop working for you. It seems that macnn.com has taken the hint, though; I'm not seeing this ad there any more.

Does it occur when you mouse over a particular word?

Just checked FF 3 (getting to update 4 Add-Ons) and Safari. Neither one showed any ads (3:22 pm CDT). But NoScript listed 20+ different scripts wanting to call as many domains. Site looks fine without them running. What am I missing? Even more ads? Or just supplying info to someone. sad.gif

Xabd,

It stays fixed in the same spot, no matter where my cursor is.
Only happens with firefox, not Safari.

Anybody else seen this? wallbash.gif

I sent an Email to MacNN this afternoon. No response yet.

A friend of mine was home with a broken ankle and got bored, so started to watch the new video games he had just purchased for his son.
He was shocked when there were presidential political advertisements embedded in the games!  I wont say which candidate paid to have this done, but I thought it was pretty invasive. You cant get rid of stuff in video games, though Ive never used one.

It's been widely reported on the news for a couple of weeks. Money buys almost anything. Sometimes not what you wanted. Only thing I can suggest is to write the company and tell them you'll never buy another of their games unless they state what's in it on the box/label. At least ask for a refund. The smaller companies do respond to customer feedback. smile.gif Of course, getting your kids, or the older ones who buy stuff for themselves, to go along might be a bigger problem than that letter! eek2.gif

IMO, it appears to be a legitimate ad that the browser is placing in the wrong spot [in other words, the site is not likely to remove it, since they get revenue from it].  I suggest upgrading to FF. 3.x.
