In a press briefing on the upcoming version of Windows the project coordinator says it will scale to as many as 256 cores on one processor:
QUOTE
During the debut of the pre-beta of Windows 7 this week, Windows Engineering Chief Steven Sinofsky made a passing reference to Windows 7 being able to scale to 256 processors. But he never said how this would be enabled.

I suppose this in response to some indication from Intel that they intend to make a processor with 256 cores?  I didn't look exhaustively but I couldn't find anything out there that said such a thing was in the works.  Anyone?
