Statistics and 'reports' often say whatever the source wants them to say. It's possible, but I'd rather wait a few months (like 12 to 24!) to judge how reliable a product is. Frankly, I suspect more phones (cell or even home wireless types) are damaged from dropping them (even if not into water!) than whatever the electronic/mechanical failure rate might be.

I suspect these are malfunctions of electronics, screens, etc. I agree with ABD in that you can't sometimes tell human error from internal malfunction. For example, dropping a phone into the toilet will kill the phone but if you dry it off and claim a malfunction, the warrant granter is stuck. Unless they perform costly tests they won't know the cause. The same if you drop the the phone on the ground.
