« on: November 12, 2008, 01:25:25 PM »
Has anyone used this:-

Neato

Any reviews?  Any other suggestions.  I want to label dvd's (about 50-100) of my own work for a freebie.  I want it to look good, neat and tidy.

Cheers
Fx

Frances, I'm assuming you're referring to their online app to design and print your own labels? I haven't used it - though I think at some point I did use their software that came with a label maker I got - one of those thingamajigs that helps you get the label on in the middle of the CD/DVD. It was probably back in OS 9 days. I've also just downloaded their templates and used them in Photoshop to do labels for CDs. Worked fine, and it was free. smile.gif

Big thing about putting printed labels on CDs & DVDs is getting them centered correctly so they don't throw things out of balance...   MANY cd & dvd players have a warning on them NOT to use them with printed / applied labels. Particularly those players that are of the 'suck it in - spit it out' (my terminology) variety...  the rollers that pull/push often mess up the labels and the cd/dvd gets stuck in the drive.

Just a word of caution!!

I need a different label twice each Sunday. I just use the clunky program that came with my R220 to print on matte finish blank CDs. It came "free" with the printer! smile.gif

I don't think any player would have a problem with balance while playing a printed CD. Burning one at 52X, however, is a completely different ball of animals! eek2.gif It still surprises me to see a CD with a mailing label stock on it! They always play just fine, so that should also indicate out of balance disks are rare. Still, a mailing label?! Just imaging what would happen when you hop into the car, that's been sitting in the Sun all day, and pop in one of those CDs. Thinking.gif I wouldn't want to try to clean up the mess of shredded, sticky paper in the player...getsick.gif

However, if the company is using most mass printing processes, they are probably also using shiny and very slick inks. Those are the only ones I've ever had trouble ejecting from a slot loader. And it's fairly difficult to hold your car bonnet-high to help gravity do its thing! rofl.gif

Not everyone has a printer that prints on CDs though, Jim. I agree - CDs with sticky labels left in a hot car wouldn't be a Good Thing. I've not had any issues with the stick on labels used indoors though - and yes, it's worth it to get one of those little plastic things that helps you get the label on so it is centered - not so much because of balance, but because otherwise you can end up with adhesive label overhanging the center hole or one edge.

Once again, if everyone would just do as I do...eek2.gif

I still have non-printable CD/DVD and use that alignment tool for keeping things centered. It is not expensive and is super simple, as long as you don't place the label on it with the sticky side down doh.gif But is I get a label off center, it's really fast to use my bench grinder to take off the excess on the outside. If there is anything hanging in the hole, a few passes with a wood rasp takes care of that. nono.gif

Personally I don't like the sticker idea.

I buy printable blank CDs/DVDs (TDK PrintOn DVD), and I print them with my Epson Stylus Photo R230. I use Disc Cover for designing the DVD labels.
