You could swap out your CD-ROM drive and install one of these.
Pioneer DVR-105Or if you would like it to be an external device.
Mercury Firewire/USB2 DVD burner w/ Pioneer DVR-105An external drive will not be recognized by iDVD, but an internal drive should. In your beige's case, it may vary do to your older Mac model. Toast should see the drive, depending on what OS you are using, there is a plug in for OS 9. OS X should recognize the drive from what others have written.
