A DVD "burner" for a beige G3

I need to know if a DVD RW (+,-) "burner" will work with a beige G3 Power PC running OS X.2.4.  I have Fire Wire 2.0 and USB ports on it.  I have not had the opportunity to use any peripherals on the ports.   The 2.0 card is new.

The CPU is running @ 300 MHz w/ a 6 GB HD w/300Mb RAM

Any feed back would be appreciated.

Not up my alley but I don't see why it wouldn't work, slowly maybe.

You didn't say what brand it was and I know Apple doesn't support third party DVD burners with iDVD but some, Pioneer in particular, have been known to work.

Pay a visit to MacGurus video page to read up on others using older Macs for that purpose.

Hopefully someone else will come along here as well.

You could swap out your CD-ROM drive and install one of these.

Or if you would like it to be an external device.

An external drive will not be recognized by iDVD, but an internal drive should.  In your beige's case, it may vary do to your older Mac model.  Toast should see the drive, depending on what OS you are using, there is a plug in for OS 9.  OS X should recognize the drive from what others have written.

Try look around here and see if others have tried what you would like to accomplish.

Looks like the results vary between successful and not successful use of iDVD with a beige.

Please keep us posted on your results, I am considering installing a DVD burner too, it's for my Blue & White PowerMac.  Thanks.

A DVD Burner for a Beige is going to be a problem.

The Pioneer DVR-105 EIDE can be found for as low as $195.

The problem is the Software.

Like Al said. iDVD won't work on an External Drive.

And for an Internal Drive, iDVD requires a G4.

So if you do a g4 Upgrade and add the Pioneer it might work.

I actually found no reports st the Drive Database.

There's an External that comes with it's own Software.

The Formac Devideon Superdrive.

I think it will work with your machine.


All in all though.

By the time you spend all the money to make this work,

you'd probably be better off with a newer machine.

Either a refurb emac or G4 Tower would be much better for this IMO.
