Safari a "bust"!!
« on: May 14, 2003, 01:07:32 AM »
I just downloaded Safari 1.0 beta 2 (V.73) but find it doesn't work at all! First, when I open the Preferences, I get a pane entitled Appearence. This pane contains buttons across the which identify the various actions one can take. But, when I click on any of these buttons, nothing happens. The pane does show font selection but again when its button is clicked nothing happens.

Also, when I typed in a url and hit return, Safari doesn't respond - it just lays there!

I am runnibg 10.2.6 on a dual 1 GHz with 1.5 MB RAM.

Anybody have better luck with the beast? I am about to dump it before it causes me any trouble.

Safari beta 2 sucks. I'm VERY glad I didn't trash the beta 1 I had on my system. there are TONS of bugs in beta 2 that aren't present in beta1. I can't even use beta 2 because most of the sites I visit use some form of asp. Beta 2 hates asp code at times. Apply took a step back in functionality in favor of UI changes. Man, more like Microsoft every stinking day.

I disagree with you scott. I have found Safari Beta 2 to be much much better than the beta versions before it. In fact, the very first version trashed my hard drive, and the second one had issues as well. Safari Beta 2 has been ultra stable for me, only misrendering a couple pages.

No Web browser, including Safari, interprets ASP (Active Server page--Microsoft's Web server scripting language). ASP pages are interpreted by the server, which then sends plain ol' HTML to the browser.

There are numerous reports of significant problems with the Safari Beta 2 browser, almost all of which are solved by dumping the Safari  .plist files from ~/library/preferences and running Safari again. Apparently, Beta 1 would sometimes write incorrect information to its .plist (preferences) file; Beta 2 then chokes on the corrupt preferences.

thanx.gif Nikki. The new Safari DL'd and installed without incident. It certainly did not take the Mother Ship long to fix the security problem. clap.gif

In both betas I simply cannot get Safari to accept a preference change for my homepage.

Just won't stick.

I use Camino 99% of the time, with no problems to speak of, so I will just watch Safari develop from afar.

Thomas,

Try setting your hompage in System Preferences/Internet/ Web/Homepage. This should get Safari to open on the page you have selected.

Hey MamaM, I had a glitch or two myself.
Friend tacit nailed them at one fell swoop. I also have Safari set, by another app, to work "cache-free", but that doesn't stop me opening the ~user/library/caches/Safari folder regularly and chucking out anything in there.

Thomas and bil, there's no point in going to so much hassle. A free IC Switch gets better all the time. It could be sitting in your menu bar, to change not only browsers but your FTP, mail and newsreading prefs.
Since first it appeared, I've not even opened the Internet Preferences.

Setting the homepage in Internet>Web preferences does indeed solve the problem for Safari. Thanks.

Still prefer Camino, however.
