Filling "Molar\'s" cavities - progress report
« on: May 07, 2003, 07:54:00 PM »
Installed 512mb of new ram and the new 80 gig Maxtor HD in this amazing machine, this afternoon.

I think that's going to be suffficient for the grandson.

What does This Gang think of this plan?

4 Partitions

    [*]7.8 gigs for OSX
    [*]5 gigs for OS 9.2.2
    [*]5 gigs for 8.6
[*]>58 gigs for plenty of games and docs
That way, I figger, it can be initially set to boot in 8.6 since most of the games he presenntly has from Disney et al do quite well with that OS.
Then, if Mom or Dad want to use X for anything, it's also available.

Anybody see anything really krazy about this scheme?

BTW, one curiosity during the initial partitioning. I had set the OSX (first) partition at 8 gigs . . . since this AIO is a beige G-3 on steroids. But, when I attempted to actually install X, it wouldn't let me - - with the "8 gig warning"

When I reduced the size of the partition to 7.8 gigs or so, for some unexplained reason, everything seems to have installed smoothly.

No big deal, but it did seem curious.

And, thanks, again, to everyone for their encouragement and information a few days ago, when I first posted my queries about this, presumably mysterious, monster!

"He's" been accepted in the household sorta like  Clifford, The Big Red Dog

Partition plan looks ok to me Dick.

I'm sure Freddy Fish will run fine.

But don't expect to play Quake 3 Arena on it.

Good heavens, Kelly:

He's only 4 years old . . . next Saturday!

Right now, he and Buzz Lightyear are jumping over suitcases, avoiding cardboard boxes and looking for the winning "case" in a pretty neat Pixar game!

The Molar is sailing along.

Grandpa is beaming.

Looking good, Dick.

He should have years of fun. Mom and Dad, too.

I'm not sure why I was surprised, but the Pixar game (w/Buzz) seems to be running in Classic, with OS X's blue "Apple", and desktop showing behind the game's window.

I guess I incorrectly anticipated that it might only appear via 9.2.2.

It's going to be interesting to see how much real use 8.6 gets, with the several older ed games, used earlier by the next youngest grandchild (now 9) when he visited us.

More glad than ever that I set The Molar up as I did.

Dick,

I was surprised at the size of your OS X partition. Mine takes up 15 GB of hard drive. But you know me, Old Bells & Whistles Tom.

I see the buttons popping off your shirt in pride all the way from Dublin. Go for it grandpa!

Looks like a good plan to me Dick.

May I recommend Kid Pix which is for the creative side of the brain.

If you can find a second hand copy of Dabbler for a year or two down the road, or for yourself  wink.gif , you won't be sorry. Corel (bought out MetaCreations) has promised a new version but nothing so far.

Just don't show him how to print yet or you will be replacing your ink faster than you can blink.
