Carbon Copy Cloner
« on: January 22, 2009, 12:09:21 PM »
Please help.

This is what I want.

I want to back up 100% everything off my iBook in case my foray into Leopard goes wrong and then I can just restore everything back to how it was 100%.

So, please can someone give me an Idiot's step-by-step guide on how to do this using Carbon Copy Cloner.  I have a Time Capsule I could put it on (via Network), or an External Maxtor hard drive (via Network) or even the iMac (via Network).

There are so many different options with CCC and I don't really understand any of them, tbh!

So a step-by-step guide please with individual bullet points.

One thing that concerns me - will I have room or the speed to run Leopard on my iBook G4 (specs now in my lefthand panel)?  Is this a stupid thing to do and a waste of time?  Should I stay where I am.  I only wanted to do this window share thing for a few weeks while I am flat on my back and can't have much access to my iMac.  I tried opening Adobe Photoshop CS on my iBook from my HD on my iMac and it wouldn't let me.  I don't know why.

Frances, it will be a bit slow to do a backup via the network (I'm assuming wireless - if it's wired it won't be so bad) so if you can connect your Time Capsule or your external Maxtor via Firewire or USB 2.0 just for this exercise, it will probably go a lot faster. I'd suggest setting it going when you're not planning on using the iBook for a few hours too, as the first backup takes a while. Updates to a backup don't take long at all, but the initial backup can take hours if you've got a lot of data.

Then you simply set up CCC to clone your drive to the target external drive (copy everything) Do you have anything on either of those drives already? If so, you should move it to the iMac or the other drive. Cloning drives to folders is possible, but makes it difficult to restore, so is not recommended from what I can see.

You should have no problem using Leopard on the G4 Powerbook. You can always feed it some more RAM at some point - it has 512 soldered to the motherboard, and 1 slot, so you could take out the 512MB in the slot and put in a 1GB stick. But see how it runs with 1GB. If you're planning on using Photoshop, do be prepared for it to be considerably slower than the iMac, but if you get the screen sharing going, Photoshop will be running on the iMac anyway, so no worries.

You can't use CCC over a network. You MUST use it with a hard drive that is physically attached to your computer.

Step 1: Double click CCC.
Step 2: Choose the Mac you are backing up as the Source.
Step 3: Choose your external hard drive as the Destination.
Step 4: Click the Clone button.

That's it! That's all you have to do.

Um, actually, you can use both CarbonCopyCloner and SuperDuper over a network.

http://www.bombich.com/software/docs/CCCHe...backup_scenario (and click on the "Learn More" link for further documentation...)

SuperDuper can do a network backup using a "sparse" disk image.

However, as I noted, these methods are extremely SLOW compared to directly connecting a drive. They're also slightly more complicated. Keep it simple, Frances! smile.gif
