I want to bin some apps - uninstalling stuff
« on: January 23, 2009, 07:00:53 AM »
Right, new plan!

(btw, thanks Tacit and Paddy for the last lot of help).

I only want Adobe Photoshop CS on my iBook and then I can do what I want and I need to keep my iBook on 10.4.11 coz it can work with OH's even older OS and I have loads of apps that only work on 10.4 and not Leopard that I use.

So.....

I need to create some room for Photoshop CS.  I have looked at my list of apps and I want to get rid of :-

2005 World Book
CD Spin Doctor
Motion Pictore HD
Adobe Photodeluxe 2.0
AOL Instant Messenger
Automator
Bud RedHead
Chess
Fairies
Fast DVD Copy
Font Book (?)
GarageBand
iSync
Macam
Marble Blast GOld
Nanosaur 2
ReadIris 7 Pro
Sherlock (?)
Transmit
Tropico2

Usually I just put it in the Finder box and then Trash anything that looks like it might be related (like plist, etc) but is there a more thorough way of uninstalling software and is there any in that above list that might cause problems in later life?

I do use iChat (as some might know) and I think my name is via AOL Instant Messenger so maybe I should not get rid of that one.

Thanks
Fx

Frances, unless you have another font management program, I wouldn't remove FontBook from your iBook. It can come in very handy if you have a corrupt font that is messing things up. It's only 18.1MB anyway. I'm not sure I'd remove Automator either (28MB) - even if you don't use it, you may find a use for it at some point. Sherlock is part of the system - don't trash that. iSync I'm not sure about.

Generally, I'd be very cautious about apps that get installed as part of the OS (I'm not talking about Chess, obviously) - there is this warning from comments on an article in Ars Technica:
QUOTE
One thing to remember is stripping a code-signed binary (such as all of Apple's Apps on OS X 10.5) will cause the application to be untrusted by the system and you will experience problems with the Keychain and various errors will appear in the console.

The article has a number of suggestions of things that can be stripped out to make room. Read all the comments too - and ignore the trolls.

http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/...ac-os-x-install

The ones I'd consider safe to uninstall:

2005 World Book
CD Spin Doctor
Motion Pictore HD
Adobe Photodeluxe 2.0
AOL Instant Messenger
Bud RedHead
Chess
Fairies
Fast DVD Copy
GarageBand
Macam
Marble Blast Gold
Nanosaur 2
ReadIris 7 Pro
Transmit
Tropico2

Question about Transmit though - have you paid for it? If not, no worries. But if you paid for it and don't have it on the iMac, I would install it on the iMac instead. It's a wonderful FTP program - I use it all the time. The built-in FTP in Dreamweaver doesn't always behave - Transmit always comes through. You can also temporarily uninstall it - but make sure you have your serial number in a safe place so you can reinstall later.

Please note the warnings about removing languages - I wouldn't do that, given the issues that seem to arise with MS Office and Adobe apps when you do that.

How much space do you have on the disk now and what is the total amount? How much space do the apps in this list take up?

It might be worth considering using XSlimmer to help slim down your OS X install...

Capacity - 55.8 GB
Available - 21.6 GB
Used - 34.1 GB
Number of Files - 410,590

I agree about the Font stuff and OS stuff completely.

But how do you uninstall apps the "correct" way?

Thanks

Also, some apps, even in Tiger, may use FontBook rather than their own font display method. Probably only Apple aps and certainly not Adobe(!). Of course, most Apple installed apps can be recovered from the Installer disk(s) or even from Apple's download site.

As to how to remove extra files that are probably mainly in Preferences, you'll probably find an app that claims to do that and even more. I simply don't trust them to actually remove only files that aren't used by another app, especially Adobe stuff that can sometimes be used by many of their apps but may appear to be part of one particular Adobe app. But the real reason I don't bother with them is that even if you remove all of those files, you may not even see the increased space show up unless you use Disk Utility to see the exact number of bytes used/available on the drive. YMMV.

If you can burn DVDs, the simplest way to 'archive' any unwanted files and still have them available if you change your mind 63.72 days from now, is to let the Finder make an archive of them in one large, DVD sized folder and use the "Smart Burn Folder" menu item.

The whole point is to do this 'house cleaning' as efficiently as possible. One can spend hours searching for apps, installing them, comparing them and using them and end up saving not much more than you would have simply dumping the files to a disk. And then discovering that something was moved that shouldn't have been! Oops! More time to waste doing repairs... dntknw.gif

Of course, you can postpone, but not avoid the problem forever, by buying a newer, bigger drive! Time or Money. Two different solutions. How much of which is available or more important to ou? laugh.gif

Loads of time, no money!

So, I binned Tropico2, Photoshop Elements, and World Book 2005.  Got a few more GB's now.

Installed Photoshop CS only to discover ImageReady worked fine but actual Photoshop was not starting up.  I did a little investigative searching on the net, dumped the Twain plug-in and now it works fine.

Problemo solved.  I can retouch and muck about with my photos to my hearts content lying down now!

Of course, when I saw "bin" I mistakenly assume (as we yanks are prone to do!) that you were talking about "binhex" as in an archived file. Almost any kind of 'archiving' will greatly reduce the size of any app/file making it much easier to place on a DVD or even a CD. And, since only a Microsoft Windows user would ever consider using a term like 'trash bin" I never though a Mac user would even consider such a term for the "TRASH!" eek2.gif Please use proper English next thyme! tongue.gif

<grin> You really should read more English novels, Jim - and watch the British shows on PBS! wink.gif

Thanks.

I also use AppDelete. Excellent program.
