Where's Airport Extreme's firmware version recorded?
« on: January 26, 2009, 02:08:09 PM »
At the time my daughter's new Buffalo ext HD arrives later this week, I also want to help her reset (soft, maybe hard) her early model Airport Extreme (a "yurt" model). It's been acting kinda squirrelly of late.

I have printed out a procedure, suitably illustrated, but one question arises: How does one find the firmware version in that device? The Hard Reset procedure, it asserts, applies only to a given firmware version, specifically 5.5.1 or later.

I've looked in Profiler for my iMacIntel but it doesn't seem to show it. Airport Utility also fails – as near as I can tell – to reveal it.

Any suggestions?

Open the "Airport Utility.app" in Utilities (may be slightly different name in Tiger).
Use the "Upload Firmware..." item in the Base Station menu. Don't be alarmed, it won't actually upload anything until you tell it to. But it should display the current Firmware version and list any others that are available. I think I have the same model and it shows I have version 5.7. Be aware that uploading a new version will require your connection to shut down until the updating is complete.
