Problem with Mail
« on: January 29, 2009, 01:17:29 AM »
Mail was fine till earlier this evening, when I noticed there was no new mail for several hours.  Usually I get about twenty messages every half hour, mostly junk.  I did get one or two messages tonight, but I know there are tons of messages which are not showing up.  I checked all my settings, and everything seems okay.  I tried my husband's computer, and the mail shows up there with no problem.  Does anyone have any idea what I can look for to remedy this problem?  Thanks in advance.

dakota;

If you are using Apple's "Mail" as your email client.... click on the "mailbox" button in the Mail menu bar.  this will open a sidebar with any / all your mail boxes listed. If there is a problem there will be a 'swirley' icon by the mailbox in question.
By 'right clicking' on the mail box in question, you'll get a drop down menu and one of the options will be to 'take mailbox online".. select that and it will retrieve any un-received mail for that box.   BESURE TO select your general inbox again before you close the side bar, or you will ONLY see mail from the selected mailbox..

And . . . to add to rnkiii's suggestions . . . if there seems to be no end to the "rotating gear/swirley/whatever" go to Mail––>Preferences––>Accounts to see panels for all the settings for each account, should you have more than one.

It's an easy way to check Mail's "vital signs", including Port Nrs. under Advanced.

No, there is nothing which shows up.  It is simply as though there is no new mail. Settings fine, no warning icons, nothing.

Dakota, check your inbox online. Pretty much all ISPs offer web mail these days. You may have something "stuck" in your inbox (big attachment or something) or... maybe your ISP has altered their spam settings and less of it is getting through. Is this true spam - the cheap-prescription-drugs-improve-your-sex-life etc. sort of spam, or is it email from businesses that you have dealt with online? (which isn't really spam, in that you can opt out of it and the opting out usually works because they are legitimate businesses, not spammers)

I don't get much spam because I'm very careful, but occasionally I'll get some for a few days and then it goes away again. Either the spammers stopped or my ISP added more perpetrators to their filters.

Dakota,
A few thoughts-

From your husband's machine, try sending yourself a message. What happens, does it bounce, do you receive a notice of undeliverable mail or what (if anything)?

In Mail, select your Inbox, then go to the menu bar/Mail and Rebuild the highlighted Inbox. This may take a few minutes. When this is done, restart in Safe Boot mode, and then restart normally.

Any alerts, notices, etc?

And just to be sure, check your Rules to ensure there is not a rule to trash mail from any recipient (or similar rule).

You can always send mail to yourself from your own Mac too... As long as you can send e-mail it doesn't matter where you send it from; it will get delivered (or not).

Bingo! Paddy et el - turns out we exceeded storage on the server.  We get hundreds of emails a day, and prefs were set to delete messages from the server after a month.  It is now set to delete them after a day! I was told those messages are gone forever, but the guy was surprised that I never got a message about there being no room on the server, and that messages were being bounced.  The people I know who sent emails yesterday got no messages that the emails were undeliverable. So much for the ability of Optimum Online to take care of its customers.  Thanks, everyone.

Dakota, are you actually getting hundreds of spam messages a day? If it bothers you (it would me!) I'd suggest a few things:

Change your email address - and get a free one from GMail or Yahoo to use for anything that isn't completely trusted. Do NOT give out your primary email address to any untrusted source, and make sure that if and when you order anything online, you UNCHECK any of those checkboxes that they stick at the end of the ordering process that can get you signed up to email from the business and sometimes all their "affiliates" (who may or may not then go on to sell your email address...not all of them are terribly scrupulous). Talk to your ISP about changing your primary email address; some won't let you do it, which is why I always tell people to guard their primary address carefully. If you change your primary email address, the old one will cease to work and all that junk will just bounce. Of course, you only tell your friends and family your new email address...

If you have a web page somewhere, make sure that you don't have your email address on it or in the code - spam bots get a huge percentage of the email addresses for their lists by sniffing web pages. There are ways to hide an email address - with contact forms (with captcha images), scripting etc. The simplest is to use the ASCII code for the "@" - "& 64 # ;" (without the spaces or quotes) in the HTML code. Although I've read that there are bots that are savvy to this, I've continued to use it on web sites I manage and have yet to have a problem with spam.

toothgrin.gif Dakota;

We (TS) just now got a message from your ISP that they couldn't send you an email notification of one of the threads you've subscribed to.... BUT THIS WAS DATED YESTERDAY!!!     Hope your internet connection is faster than that...

Just thought I'd let you know that your ISP NOW knows that your mail box is over limit...

Good Luck with  all that..

Mailbox no longer over the limit, but yes, yesterday was a problem.  I am hearing about a lot of bounced mails.  No, I don't get a lot of spam, but I do get tons of email a day.

You may also have the option to delete from the server when downloaded. I guess there is a purpose for leaving on the server for some amount of time but I've never bothered. Once I can read them on my computer, that's where they are, no need to have them on the server too, exactly because of the limits that may be set for space on that server. (And the sometimes poor service provided by the company) But you are not alone in having emails bounce, I see it several times a month for the same reason, it seems many people don't have their message ever deleted from the server. wallbash.gif
