I see that Apple has a new software special that includes Leopard, iLife and iWork in the same package (Mac Box Set). I am thinking of getting it and upgrading to Leopard finally, but want to know about iWork first. Is it easy to transfer my existing Excel and Word docments into iWork, and how well do the programs work, compared to Office?

I edit a newsletter for the Friends of the Library and am a huge fan of Pages '08. Just received '09 (installed it 30 minutes ago), which I fully expect is going to be even more f-u-n. That's right, it's genuinely fun to use.

I get submissions in Word, via e-mail, regularly. They worked into Pages '08 without a sneeze.

I can't say I've ever tried Excel––>Numbers, since I'm a die hard FileMaker fan . . . for nearly 20 years.

I suggest waiting to see if other TeeEssers have experience w/Excel, plus check with your Apple Store. The "literature" sez "no problem"

Even at the Apple Store price, the Box Set is a tremendous bargain. You'll pay around 10 bucks for a retail disk of Leopard, over the list prices of the two suites.

everyone for your suggestions. It does sound like a good deal and that is what drew my interest to it.

I will check out Amazon right away, as well as the MacWorld review and forums.

It's a good deal if you aren't planning on buying a new Mac anytime within the next year. Otherwise, you'll get iLife and Leopard included in that purchase. All you'd need to buy then would be iWork. However, you'll also get a Demo version of iWork on the new machine. That might be the best way to compare what you do in Excel and how well Numbers would suit that. And, if you wait long enough, you'll even get the "white" version of Leopard!

Kathy, you can also download a free demo version of iWork '09 from the online Apple Store and put it through its paces for thirty days. That should tell you what you need to know...
