Although not as big as Quark for OS X, this is another encouraging sign that the software industry is taking another look at the Mac and OS X.

AutoDesk is asking people to email them if they're interested in an OS X version of AutoCAD. Why they need to ask is beyond me - there was a petition circulating for ages on the subject!! - but at least they're now paying attention. Interestingly, I know of at least one all-Mac office that uses ArchiCAD and would never switch - even new employees familiar with AutoCAD are won over. So, not sure if the 33% of US architectural offices that are currently Mac-only are going to bite or not, given the options. Several posters at MacCentral equated AutoCAD with MS Word - not the best, but the biggest and the more ubiquitous.

In reading the thread on MacCentral, I came across this reference to PowerCADD and had a look. Neat stuff - especially the drawings that were rendered with Painter.

I rarely encounter other architects or engineers that do not use AutoCad. I've had to use it for a long time, but have used three others for shorter periods. AutoCad is the 1,000 pound gorilla. It works, but it doesn't foster Mac ownership in the AEC industry.

I have Claris CAD in my old power book. Haven't been able to do much with it. Tried looking for the book on how to. No such luck. Had a senior CAD Tech try it out and he couldn't figure much on it either.

How about Adobe Illustrator is it a good program to use for engineering drawings? I ran into a "How to Book" on it the tech drwaing samples look impressive.

Hmmm, the business world warming up to Apple.....

'bout time.

Even if AutoCAD doesn't port, that is a nice statement for Apple, IMO, to have AutoDesk look Apple's way.

Well, I suppose you could do it with Illustrator but it would be like using AppleWorks to write a book. Possible but FrameMaker or In-Design would be much easier with many more tools and feature choices.

That book on Illustrator sounds interesting, though. What is it called?

Hmm, i know what you mean Krissel.
But, i'm very experienced with Illustrator and do feel that illustrator can be used, if you just know to use the proper tools for the proper drawnings.
Illustrator has the strong ability to calculate maths when you type them in the toolboxes (type +, -, * and / to let illustrator do the maths on them and give you the sollution).
Illustrator has .dxf and .dwg export onboard and i both haved used them myself already (on simple mathers).

But still, as i said.. i know what you mean and i would also say that Illustrator is not the best program to use it for CadCam drawings.
It's just as good as it comes if you don't have anything else to use... i think

Sorry it took long to get back to you on this.

Here is the information:"Macworld Illustrator 6 Bible" 2nd Edition, IDG Books, ISBN I-56884-494-8, by Ted Alspach.

The sketch I am referring to is "Color Plate 7-1" The Insert Reads: This floor plan was created by using multiple layers to help organize the individual components of the design."
