What's New That Matters?

I am a photographer and I use my Mac Pro for post processing and internet. I am not knowledgeable of Unix or any other language. I see all these posts titles and wonder what they are all about. My wife and I love adventure games. She is great at them and I am deposed almost from the start. She is Sudoku and crosswords at blazing speed and I am left in the dust. I spend time worrying about equations of light and shadow.

I do try to repair the computers and keep them running. I do the hardware and the software, she does her mail.

So, what are all these different programs and the society that is behind them for Unix. I do read and what I have read is intriguing. How would I learn more, when I have the time? Not the society but how to better understand the Unix language. I found the Dos and MSdos a pain. I learned just enough to keep my computers running. I bailed when Intel Macs came around. Seemed like a go between for me.

I'm not sure this is a good forum for Unix info. I am sure that there are more dedicated sites/forums around. We generally don't ever bother using Unix with a Mac, except for very occasional forays in Terminal to make a single adjustment to a usually rather minute part of the OS. One of the reasons most of us like the Mac (and even previous Apple OSs, is that we don't need to know any 'language' to operate the computer extremely well. That's the kind of stuff we think the OS should be hiding/shielding us from. At least that's my general opinion, not trying to speak for anyone else. wink.gif

If something major doesn't work correctly, it's either Apple's or the developers problem to get it corrected. Now. Most Mac users won't tolerate a malfunctioning OS/app/driver/etc. After all it's supposed to "just work!" thumbup.gif

Ok, Just am finding my feet here. I certainly can't land a plane in a river. That said, thanks for the slack.

My first computer experience was Univac. Saved a lot of Sailors with that monodome x's 3. Tony

Coming off a hemi-sick bed ** , I want to agree w/ABD. "Tis one of the many wonders of The Mac, the computer for the rest of us.
