The New Mini
« on: March 28, 2009, 01:53:08 PM »
4 days from order to the door.  Amazing. yahoo.gif   It came loaded with OSX 10.5.4.so the first thing I did was upgrade everything from "software update". Then using the "migration assistant" moved everything from a current BU drive osx 10.4.11. I now have a cornucopia of things I do not totally understand but suspect I will eventually weed my way thru em.   The applications that I expected to work all seem to. ie: office 2004, filemaker pro7, etc.  The ones I did not expect to work, Didn't.  Photoshop 7 for example, and the "user" files seem complete.

The Apple Apps are another story. I cannot find the files for "Address Book", Bookmarks etc for either Safari or Firefox, the Photo Library from IPhoto, Can anyone tell me where they might be and how do I get them into the "New Applications'?  I am assuming they are on the drive someplace cause the Itunes music imported just fine.

Typically, iPhoto stores photos in the home folder->Pictures->iPhoto Library if you have iPhoto '08 or later. In order to see the picture files, you will need to right click on this file and select "show package contents". With earlier versions of iPhoto, you can see all the "child" folders inside a folder called just iPhoto. BTW, for some reason or other, I also have an iPhoto folder in my Documents folder - an earlier version of iPhoto put it there as far as I know. I need to move the pics from that into the later version...or I could just move 'em all to Lightroom, since that's what I'm using these days. Anyway, if your Macs are networked, you can import the older file by simply pointing iPhoto to it.

Bookmarks for Safari are in your home folder->Library->Safari->Bookmarks.plist

Bookmarks for Firefox are in home folder->Library->Application Support->Firefox->Profiles->(some random letters)default->bookmarks.html

You should be able to import both by either pointing the Mac mini to the files (assuming the old and new Mac are networked and file sharing is on) or by copying both of those files to the mini and then importing them from the "import bookmarks" menu item.

The Address book data is also in the home folder->Library->Application Support->Address Book. You can export an Address book archive and then import that into the new version if you wish. Don't know if that's the easiest method or whether simply moving all the files is easier.

Did you not use Migration Assistant? When I got my new Mac in November, that's what I did and all of these things imported without a hitch.

Daryl, all of those files associated with Apple applications should have been moved when you used Migration Assistant. You did tell it that it was OK to move your user files, didn't you? When I upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5 all that stuff transferred automatically...

And Yes, Photoshop 7 is incompatible with 10.5.  CS3 was the last version that was eligible for the upgrade price if you have PS7.  So you will have to boot from a Tiger volume to use PS7 or pay the full price to upgrade to CS4 if you want to continue using Photoshop. The less expensive option is to buy Photoshop Elements.

I dont know what I did to start with but I regrouped, did an erase and install, then connected the BU drive via firewire and told osx to move everything. Things are looking up now.  Mail works,
Firefox works, Things have a familar appearance

Still a work in progress

When I used Migration Assistant it moved everything OK except the Address Book.  I tried to move it by hand but that didn't work. Only way was to boot back to Tiger and export it from there.

The first CS version of Photoshop (the next one after 7) does work with Leopard if you can get your hands on that.  Oddly, the other Adobe products that shipped with PS 7 in that year's creative suite all work fine with Leopard.

Those are:

InDesign 2
Illustrator 10
Adobe GoLive 6

Go figure.  Thinking.gif

Daryl

Things are looking good (I think) Everything seems to be working. Lastly I downloaded all of the "software updates" and am now running 10.5.6. clap.gif

One thing that I do not understand (probably a huge  understatement):  IPHOTO rolleyes.gif

It works just like it did on the laptop (10.4.11) All of the pics are there, HOWEVER it is version 4.0.3.  Should it not have upgraded with the new OS?

The Mini  came with ILIFE 09 which I have not yet installed yet.

What am I missing?? unsure.gif

You must install iLife '09 to upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto...
