QuickTime 7.6
« on: May 13, 2009, 02:33:03 AM »
Having been burned in the past [not so often since OS-X matured], I have become skeptical, rather than blithely trusting Apple to work out all the 'gotchas' before going live with its various and sundry software updates [I do NOT use Software Update to check for or install any updates].

I was offered a free download of a music video as part of iTunes' weekly Tuesday offerings], and was presented with a QuickTime upgrade to v.7.6 [I'm currently running QuickTime Pro 7.5.5 with OS-X 10.5.4].

I tried searching at MacFixIt and the TS forums [which returned an error msg, FWIW] and other than some probs w/ the d/l process, there was nothing I saw that scared me off.

Does anybunny have any knowledge of / personal experience with the stability [problems or issues or lack thereof] of this particular upgrade?

I'm also wondering if this will require another $29.95 fee for me to retain the features/functionality of QuickTime Pro...

PS -I noticed that this update was released several months back, so I might have missed a prior discussion here, but a search on "QuickTime 7.6" turned up no info...

Roy & Neil,

Thanks for your responses.

I'll go ahead and install QT 7.6 on the strength of your recommendations [I 'manually' dl'd the updater, w/o any apparent glitches, and it's sitting on my desktop].

PS - While this might or might not be relevant, I have NOT upgraded iTunes past v.8.01 based on many reports of probs w/ iPod 2nd Gen Shuffles that are posted in Apple's user forums.

Remember, just because others may be having troubles, that doesn't, necessarily mean you will have them, also. As stated in a recent post, many people report problems with the bare minimum of information! From what is not said, one can only guess at why they had a problem. dntknw.gif (Sometimes, we even have to assume are even talking about a Mac!)

Secondly, when updating/upgrading, it is always wise to keep a copy of the original app and, at least, its prefs file, more files, if you can find them. DO NOT delete those files, that may even make it impossible to do the update. But keeping a copy of the original (I just use the Finder's "Compress" function and leave the resulting file right there next to the original) is extremely fast and takes very little space on your drive. If things don't go well, it is usually a simple matter to delete the new version and uncompress the original and be back up to speed. Of course, if you install stuff immediately when it becomes available, you have absolutely nothing to base the decision on except faith in the developers ability to test the code on every conceivable combination of hardware and software around. That it won't work on several of those combinations should not come as the surprise it seems to continually illicit. dntknw.gif

My method is just what I use, there are many others, some are as simple as waiting a few days/weeks/months/years( blush-anim-cl.gif ). And use the experience of others, like kbear to make your updates less traumatic. Of course, even then, you may have the single combination of hardware, software and karma that will break the new software! Just consider yourself "special!" rofl.gif

Some good advice there, Jim!

For quite a while now, I've generally delayed upgrading/updating until I encounter a definite need for the newer version, and then I proceed with caution.

I like the Compressing idea, I'll try it with this QT upgrade.
