Need Advice on G4 purchase
« on: May 24, 2003, 09:40:07 PM »
Currently using G4733 and want to get a new computer - I don't even touch OSX at this point, let alone Jaguar, which sits quietly in a box above the computer - WAITING.  I'm not sure I want to cope with a total change in computer usaage by getting the new dual 1.25 gig G4.  Have been considering the one which boots from 9 as well, even though it does not have firewire 800- and do I need that?  What would be the real differences between the two machines - is there enough of a difference to really warrant jumping headlong into a computer which uses only Jaguar?! wallbash.gif

Personally, I wouldn't buy a PM G4 at the moment.
All rumors point that at WWDC (or MacWorld) Apple will be releasing new PowerMacs (probably with IBM PowerPC 970 64-bit processor).

Regarding the two models you have in mind it really depends on whether you want OS 9 booting or not.
The newer PowerMac only differs in very few features:
FireWire 800
AirPort Extreme ready
BlueTooth built-in

Do you need FireWire 800?
I'd say it's nice to have it, but at the moment there are only few devices that take advantage of the faster speed.
For the future it's good to have it, no doubt.

Do you need AirPort Extreme?
If you have other Mac hardware that supports AirPort Extreme it's definitely cool, because it's so much faster than AirPort.
If not, I don't think it makes sense.

Do you need BlueTooth?
If you have a cell phone or PDA that uses this technology, it's a cool feature.
Furthermore, it's possible that we'll see BlueTooth mice and keyboards. Hence, it's good to have it, IMO.

And whether you need OS 9 boot or not is something you'd have to decide based on the apps you're using most.
For me OS 9 is not important any more, but for others it still definitely is.

First I have to ask....what do you do with your mac? Is it work related? Or just home?

Any of the new macs Apple has for sale (1ghz, dual 1.25, dual 1.42) only boot into OSX but can use Classic. There is a OS9 only system on there, the dual 1.25ghz, but it's more expensive.

Rumors of new powermacs coming this summer/fall. If they do, and most likely they will, the price of the current powermacs will fall. Plus the new powermacs definately won't boot into OS9...and may just drop it all together. (who knows though!)

My question to you is...why not start using OSX? Install it on another HD or external one and play with it when you have time. Start getting to know it rather than being afraid of it. If the reason you haven't switched to OSX yet is because of the apps (Quark not released yet/Can't afford to upgrade yet/etc) then at least play with the OS so that when you can switch, you will at least be familiar with it.

Some of the big differences between your 733 and a new powermac are dual processors, ram, and better motherboard. But wait...till at least this fall when the new powermacs come out...then ask.

I have a Quicksilver 933 that boots to both 9x and 10.

I doubt the new ones with the IBM PowerPC 970 64-bit processor will boot to 9x also.

Why do you want a new one? Do you want a faster mac? If so you may want to upgrade the processor instead.

I don't know what the bus speed of your 733 is so......

It's just that the new macs don't boot to 9x.

There were two versions of the 733. There was the original G4 looking case like this and the quicksilver one, both of which have the 133mhz bus.

Everymac is a great source of info.

I agree that you might be a candidate for a Processor Upgrade. smile.gif

If you do have the Quicksilver 733 these are your options.

You should probably also make yourself familiar with OS X. smile.gif

I've nothing more to add which the others have already pointed out.

Except perhaps the reasoning why I opted for dual boot instead of X/classic.

I've the option of either using a bootable cd with utilities that has an OS 9xx system, another partition that has the utilities and an OS 9xx system or an extra internal drive with OS 9xx system. Utilities like TechTool Pro,DiskWarrior,Norton etc.
That was when there really wasn't any utility applications/programs (other than disk first aid for example) that could work with Xxx.

Progress with the third party vendors are changing very fast these days.
I can see in the very near future that they (fact some already) will be working along side Jaguar.

Yet still. It's nice to know I have the option to boot into OS 9xx [not very often lately though] when I want. ~~ can't teach an old dog new tricks - syndrome ~~

Hi All, Havent been here for a while, and my Netscape no longer is compatible with TS.  So here we are with IE.
Anyway, I will be buying a new Mac sometime this fall, as I don't want to go thru OS X upgrade trauma on my old G4.  Will use the new Mac with the new OS, and the older machines with 9.2.2 for my photo work. Time for a new toy, and would like to be able to use iPhoto and some of the new things like iTunes/music store.
Will be interested in the new Macs, if they have quiet fans, price, software compatibility and so forth.
Should be fun.

Dakota, I would highly recommend getting that box down off the shelf! Maybe you should take advantage of that CompUSA deal on Maxtor 160 GB drives I posted earlier, install X on the new drive, and start to become familiar with the OS.

Why?

Well, depending on how it goes, your decision may be quite different than what it would be had you not taken the plunge. You may find that you love OS X and booting into 9 will become moot. Or you may find it isn't your cup of tea, which will demand different HARDWARE decisions. Expensive hardware decisions.

Your cheapest option is over $500 on an upgrade - so playing around a bit first is well worth the time and effort, to avoid costly mistakes.

And make sure that you actually DO something in X - don't just "visit", or you won't become comfortable very quickly. Use whatever freeware and OSX compatible software you can - browsers, Mail, the iApps, AppleWorks, etc. As long as you have enough RAM, your existing machine should handle Jag nicely - not blazingly fast, but certainly not dog-slow! Until recently, I was running X on a 400MHz Sawtooth - which has now been upgraded with a 1GHz Sonnet accelerator. My Powerbook is an 800MHz Ti, and it runs X very nicely indeed.

I took the plunge into X once all the software I currently use was available - I had decided that I was not about to mess around with Classic. After 3 days of nothing but X, I was hooked and had no desire to go back to 9. That was 17 months ago. Others switch back and forth, and some just dabble in X while using 9 for most work. I do know that the only way to become comfortable quickly is to use it exclusively for a stretch, because at first it may be stranger-in-a-strange-land time and you'll be tempted to "go home" to 9.

Anyway, that's the order in which I'd put the horse and the cart... wink.gif

And if you do decide on spiffy new X-only hardware, I'd follow the advice above and see what the next round of towers brings. Everything I've read points to the new IBM chips appearing soon - by the fall at least, and if Apple is trying to snag the pre-back-to-school season too, perhaps earlier.

interesting story..... BusinessWeek Online
QUOTE
ADDING IT UP.
Furthermore, Apple faces a large overhang of stock options awarded to employees. That could hurt shareholders down the road when Apple employees and execs buy these options and, suddenly, the pool of Apple shares on the market grows considerably larger. While Apple continues to claim that 50% of all people buying new computers at their company stores previously never owned a Mac, the Cupertino crew hasn't shown any major market-share gains yet.
Nevertheless, I think the positive developments outweigh any negatives right now. Given the unique advantages in each market, an Apple resurgence need not be tied to a broad PC recovery. So add up the benefits from promising new chips, an OS X version of Quark, a rebounding online ad market, and, oh yes, a rocking music store, and Apple could outpace many other PC makers in the months ahead.

I think the BW article was balanced on the whole, Alex Salkever demonstrates the need for speed, and applications that will take advantage of it. It shows the strengths and weaknesses in the strategy, I think  this is telling........

Not sure where it says that SB. smile.gif

But I doubt it.

I don't see a mac selling with Linux.

You can always put your own version on though.
