Our house backs up to a creek, so we are used to seeing a variety of different birds and wild animals. However, this afternoon my wife saw two unusual birds we had never seen before. So I took some pictures.

The birds were just wandering around and looking around the backyard, then went to the driveway and finally the front yard. One bird flew up into a tree, but flew back down a few minutes later. I got fairly close, but they were not frightened. The bird on the right was probably about 15 inches tall and the one on the left about 13 inches tall.

Anyone know what type they are?

I'm no bird expert, but they both look young to me.

I suspect that they're unfamiliar to you b/c they are immature, and change somewhat as they age.

My guess would be a baby/juvenile heron -- but don't bet on my guess.

Looks like a juvenile heron to me too, we get tons of migrating birds where we are and sometimes we see ones that weve never seen before. Its fun.

Yesterday after I posted the pics on TS, I posted them on whatbird.com. The answer on whatbird.com & TS is the same - juvenile yellow-crowned night heron.

Haven't seen the birds today & don't know if they will come back.

A few years back my son and I came across a young heron in the Baker Wetlands on the southside of Lawrence. We got within 15 feet of it and I thought perhaps it was sick or injured, but it did move away from us finally (we didn't move, just took pictures).
