2 vexing mini-problems (unrelated to one another, I think)
« on: July 18, 2009, 10:03:53 AM »
Nr. 1:
I have a wireless keyboard "attached" to my iMac/Intel. Somehow in the last several weeks it no longer appears to have a functioning numerical key pad. ZIP. NADA. Nuthin'. No numbers, no anything-else.

The only number(s) I can put on the display are from the top row of the keyboard. I'm guessing there's a NumLock key/function hidden somewhere (as there is on my MB-Pro's KB), or maybe a Pref somewhere, but I'll be darned if I can discover it. All the remainder of the keyboard seems to function, just fine, thank you.

Any ideas?

Nr. 2:
I'm getting ready ("Finally!", notes my spouse) to scan/transfer a several 100 page family history (text and photos) to digital format. I have confidence that my HP flatbed scanner will be able to do so, aided by VueScan's software.

However, I don't like (at ALL) the default setting that sends a scanned image directly to PS Elements 6 for any tweaking before printing/recording. I'd like to be able make my own choice of iPhoto or PSE, but I'll be darned if I can discover the key to that kingdom.

Any other ideas heer from VueScan users?

Ed Note: It's good to be back posting again, after a long "pause" for a defective "skeleton". It's now functioning, albeit still slowly, on at least 5 sylinders.

Bingo (cubed), SB.

How did you ever recall that? notworthy.gif

Now I remember . . . several weeks ago looking around for a larger pointer.

I must have, inadvertently, "fixed-up" a few other things without being aware. "Inadvertence" is becoming my middle name, I regret to report.

Thanks much.

Now about that VueScan . . . . . . . . . whistling.gif

Hey Dick,

Great to see you back! Listen, 5 cyliders is more than you need especially with a 4 cylinder body. Now you have a redundant system and that ain't all bad. thumbup.gif welcome.gif

Hey Dick,

I parked Vuescan and now use Presto-PageManager so I can't give you exact details of my preferences...but here it goes.

With Vuescan open look at
>input> task>it should say "scan to file"
>ouput will determine the type of file that you want
>Pref ..if you don't like the choices then UNcheck "External Viewer"

I would do a test scan to find out where the file ends up, Applications/VueScan is likely, if you can't find it, Search for Latest activity.

Once you find the file, open the Application of your choice and then use the aps selection feature, >MENUbar> FILE>OPEN to select the file.

Bingo, again, SB

I should have reported in my dilemma-description that I thought I had examined all the details of those dropdowns. Clearly (now) I didn't understand the External Viewer button, except that it didn't reveal an iPhoto option, which merely compounded my puzzlement. So I passed it by. BIG mistake, as you demonstrated.

De-selecting External Viewer immediately (without asking) put the scanned pic right on my desktop . . . better than the average destination! It still escapes me why the (default) destination folder cannot be iPhoto? Why it's always grayed-out?

But thanks, again and very much. This has been immensely helpful. And, right when I needed it

Now, to Herr Dr. Professor MamaMoose:

Whadaya mean a 4-cylinder body? The chassis is heavy duty, just like yours, I hasten to add. Without a new gear box, I need all the torque I can muster! rolleyes.gif

Automotive Sidebar:
While showing a friend around the Peninsula on Friday, I stopped in (for the first time) at the Tesla showroom/assembly plant (on El Camino, in Menlo Park). Their little jewels – a 2 seater, of course, and a sedan (in process) are simply gorgeous. 2 speeds, only, Forward and Reverse, 0-7000 rpm, mol i-n-s-t-a-n-t-l-y. The body panels are flown-in from the UK (Lotus). The assembly "line" looks similar to a clean room at HP.

Now if I can just scrape up 123,000 bucks from petty cash! wacko.gif

Two in a row and I'm not in Vegas...figures. If i were I could consider a Tesla for local transport. 300 miles sounds good if the road is open, but in traffic an electric range is diminished quite a bit. It would be interesting to see the time value as well as the distance advertised on the same page, but that might be asking too much. wink.gif

For appearance sake you may want to stick with the Canary Caddy, they just don't make them like that anymore. smile.gif

The Canary ('86) still looks great. Runs w/o a sneeze. My son's family is using it for a spare, until they decide whether to turn it in on a fuel efficient newbie. The State of California – in its < infinite wisdom – offered me all of 650 bucks for it to get it off the road. It pases smog w/flying colors, has been in top mechanical shape for 23 years. I cannot bear to imagine that canary leather going to a crusher, or whatever.

However, with a '92 (Scarlet & Gray) and an '07 with all the bells-and-whistles, we still probably have (in our present circumstances) one too many Caddys! wub.gif

This is a Tech post, right?

Hey Dick, doesn't that Caddy qualify for the new gummint handout for old clunkers?  wink.gif

Yeah, SB, I'm becoming a warehouse for Macs, too.  12 at last count, though 2 are not in operating condition (no battery and disassembled)  and two are slated to be given away. The working Macs are running at the very least Panther (3) Tiger (4) and Leopard (3).

Don't ask.   wacko.gif
