Hey All You Eudora Users!
« on: July 17, 2009, 08:13:48 PM »
Last night the domain that has all my current email accounts was moved to a new server with an up-to-date management interface.

I decided to switch from POP to IMAP and after a little trial-and-error (mostly error...) I got the accounts working.

My problem: Downloaded email is now ignoring my Eudora filters and all mail is going to individual inboxes in a "submenu" of mailboxes directly below my old mailboxes. I tried creating a few new filters with the same effect... So how do I get my mail to use the filters and be directed to the correct mailbox?  Or is this new email behavior a "feature" of IMAP?

I may be better off using POP again...

Gosh, can't help you, Mayo. I've never used IMAP (with Eudora or any other email program). If you figure it out, please share the results.

I Googled the subject and found some info; now I need to read it.... From what I gleaned in less than a minute of reading this is normal behavior on Eudora's part.

At least I can access all my email accounts now. I can fine-tune things tomorrow...

I'm not quite sure that i've got all that your saying so I'll just try to paint this picture.

Your mailbox in your computer is a reflection of your online server.

If you convert from POP to IMAP your telling the application to mirror the content of the mail program to the contant of the server, so when you access it online it is a mirror of what you have at home or on other computers. If you create boxes in Eudora the boxes should be reflected on the server and vice versa.
iMap is a Map of your content, but may not follow your application specific filters, options or preferences.

On you computer you should be able to see what is on your computer as well as what's on the server. In this photo you'll notice that the online account has a lock on it. There are some controls you can use on the server side that are universal. And you can stop spam at the server so it does not download. Depending on the account your accessing you can color-code specific email or flag it. In Entourage i setup Projects and Categories that I can see in my client that are not visible in my webmail, to give you an example of stuff that may not be transformational.

In other words, your filters will only work on messages you actually download.

As I understand it (and that is usually vague and confused), POP accounts simply push any messages to you as soon as you log in and then deletes them from that server. IMAP simply shows you what's on the server but only downloads what you ask for. And it only deletes messages based on setting you have made (never ever, after downloading, every 26.8 days, after viewing more than 23 times, etc.). Messages will remain on the server no matter what you filters might do with them once they are downloaded, at least if the filters are only on your machine.

That's my story, anyway, and I'm not interested in corrections, added details or the truth! rolleyes.gif wallbash.gif

QUOTE
IMAP gives the most benefit to people who connect to a mailhost using more than one computer, since an IMAP-enabled mail account will look the same on all these machines, from overall mailbox structure down to the status of individual messages, and any changes made to a mailbox on one machine become visible to the rest.

OK, NOW I am beginning to get it... (I still haven't had the opportunity to pursue this further.) I may have to rethink moving to IMAP, because I have all these mailboxes and filters setup in Eudora and I don't want to remake the wheel, so to speak... POP has been working fine for me all these years, probably because I access my mail mainly from one Mac.

OKAAAY... I switched everything to POP3. I discovered that in Apple Mail it pays to just delete the old accounts and create new ones using the Account Wizard. Changing the password was especially problematic even after I deleted related passwords from the Keychain. Starting-over from scratch did the trick...

Mayo, to understand IMAP it might benefit you to open a gmail/yahoo account and play with IMAP. It will run in your client and you can send and receive stuff to yourself from other accounts. It doesn't cost a nickel and it's a simple task.

Once you use it i think you'll see the why its growing in popularity. wink.gif
