"And that's the way it is...
« on: July 18, 2009, 08:42:10 AM »
The last, great news broadcaster is gone. Just two days before one of the events that helped define his status as the trusted voice of news.

His standard of integrity and excellence remains a goal that, so far, only a few have even approached. IMHO, none have equaled it in my adult life. Mr. Murrow wisely saw his potential. But that era has ended.

Scot Simon said it well this morning. I won't even attempt to paraphrase him, but <you can listen here> after 7 pm EDT.

Watched a news special on 'Uncle Walter' last night and Sneakers and I both shed a tear. He was a part of our lives for so many years, and for so many major events. Who can forget him almost breaking down when he announced Kennedy's death? sad.gif

His retirement was the end of real, honest news, imho; and his death is a loss for all of us.

I got to shake hands with him in a hotel lobby in Colorado Springs when I was in my 20's!  He was very pleasant to talk to; not a bit of attitude or anything.  He also seemed to have an air of integrity that is lacking in a lot of the news today.

Just watched CBS Sunday Morning Show which was mostly about Walter and it was surprising some of the things I didn't know about him.  They're going to replace 60 Minutes tonight with a tribute to him.

Remembered to go back to the NPR site and retrieve the essay by Scott Simon. The biggest problem with radio is that there is no written text to reread when you hear something you want to hear again!. Fortunately, NPR does a great job of publishing the audio within 12 hours of broadcast. clap.gif Anyway, the statement from Mr. Simon that I thought summed up Mr. Cronkite better than anything else I've heard was, "When Walter Cronkite told America "that's the way it is," you could be sure that's the way it was, not the way you wanted it to be."
