Carina Software SkyVoyager Astronomy Software FREE Today
« on: July 20, 2009, 03:26:30 PM »
The iPhone app SkyVoyager is free today only 7-20-09. It normally costs $14.95. Here is the TUAW article about the giveaway, along with a mini review.

Carina was offering downloads of the MC and PC desktop versions for only one cent. But they had such an overwhelming response that they had to suspend the offer because the server became overloaded and their Web hosting provider informed them that they were close to violating their email Terms of Service (TOS).

The TUAW article has a link to an earlier review of another iPhone astronomy app called PocketUniverse ($2.99) which utilizes the iPhone 3GS compass and position sensors to assist locating stars in the direction the iPhone is pointing.

Pretty good price...I'll read all the 32 reviews and decide if it's worth it...wallbash.gif

Unfortunately, I didn't investigate your post until a few minutes ago. Their ISP asked them to remove the $0.01 PC/Mac software offer because their serial number generator was creating up to 1,000 emails an hour! Maybe later. Maybe a higher price. $0.02? dntknw.gif I can see their new slogan now, "Our two cents is worth a thousand pictures!" Groaner.gif

Odd coincidence.... I was at my folks on Saturday looking up at the night sky with my Dad.  We were wondering what some of the stars were and I mentioned that there were computer programs that could identify what you were looking at from your location.

Now I have it for my Touch.  Thanks. thumbup.gif

My husband built a 6 inch telescope about 25 years ago, but cant use it here any more, too much background light.
So we are taking it up to Maine, as our son-in-law's place in the mountains is about 100 acres with no electricity, thus no interfering lights. (Unless grandma turns the generator on.)
It would be fun to have some maps of what we see in the sky, there are some in our cellar, which I put away when we no longer used the scope here.
But there must be some nice computer sites with info like this.  October is when we start looking.
Fun stuff.
