How to Upgrade and Convert?
« Reply #15 on: July 28, 2009, 08:52:13 PM »
This sounds like the situation I had when I used MA to move 'stuff' from my old G5 HDD to my new Intel....

Did MA have you make a new user when you began using it???

If so, log out of the current user and sign on as the 'new' user MA asked you to create.  I suspect you will find your missing data there.

Just my $.02...  HTH

Sorry,Bob. Not sure what you mean. I am the only User. And Administrator(?).
Are you saying to set up another User account for OSX?

I rebooted and all my email files and bookmarks are back! That problem solved.

The only thing left is to get my WORK partition/files transferred. Each time I start to duplicate the files from the target volume on my desktop, I get the same message can't do it cause "selection contains both back up and non back up items". What does that mean?

It sounds like somehow the work partition is being treated as a Time Machine drive. Did you somehow say yes to one of those questions on start of the new drive regarding creating a Time Machine backup?

Anyway, if all the work partition has is data and/or programs, the easiest way to move it is to just copy the files by drag and drop. In fact you can just drag the entire icon over the new drive and it will be copied in full like a folder into the new drive. But take a look in it first to make sure that it hasn't created a backup inside.  You can use this opportunity to rearrange the files into new folders if you wish and leave behind anything you really don't want.

Almost everything seems to be working. This IS much easier than the last time I went through this process some years ago.

The 24" screen is awesome. Great to have a complete work document on screen, NOT covered up by many palettes.
Except the top of the screen is about 5" higher than my previous 19" Apple Display. I find myself looking UP, not down. Not a good thing to do long term. My work chair is the highest it can be. Proper ergonomics says your eyes should be higher than the top of the screen. What adjustments have you folks made?

I have an internal HD on my G4 that I used for backup and active storage as my G4 filled up. Not sure how to transfer those 120 gb of files to the iMac... suggestions?

My Photoshop 7 does not open, as I was told. Still haven't been able to find a legit version of CS or CS2 to buy and upgrade from there.
Far too many suspicious ones on eBay for too cheap prices. Especially when I ask the vendor for the serial number!

If you have the time, evolution may move your eyes farther up your face...
If you don't have the time, try a booster seat (cushion), but be aware your legs may hit the bottom of the table top. A great solution would be for Apple to make the stand capable of flipping the screen so that the bottom aluminum was on the top. There were once several makers of monitors that could be flipped from horizontal (landscape) to vertical (portrait) position. Why not right/upside down? Simple gravity switch would flip the screen image when the screen was inverted/flipped.

There are rather expensive desks that have a depressed area for a monitor. I once thought about one for my wife who has several fused vertebra in her neck. I decided against that, as a new wife was less expensive... tease.gif scram.gif

Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

The lack of sufficient adjustments on the flat screen iMacs is simply terrible; Apple definitely went for form over function and it can be a real Pain In The Neck. I almost returned my iMac because it caused such bad neck pain from looking up. Why is it that Dell monitors not only tilt, they can also be raised and lowered 5-7 inches? Then to add Insult To Injury Apple opted for glassy screens with no matte option... Who the heck is running the design department at Apple?

I was lucky: I discovered that I could raise my chair higher than I originally thought. I also have my keyboard and trackball raised on books. It's funky but It Works. My eyes aren't higher than the monitor but at least now I can look pretty much straight at it without neck strain.

OK. Sounds like I have to do something makeshift to reduce any pain in the neck. Kinda weird... this amazing new technology, and now I'm gonna prop stuff up with books or shims to get my chair and monitor to align! :-)

Any advice with this...

You can transfer the data merely by drag and drop.  You don't want to transfer any system files so using SuperDuper would require creating a custom script that would ignore the previous system.

The quickest and easiest is to just connect them via FW target mode, open the old hard drive and then drag the folders that you want over to the new Mac.  This is an opportunity to reorganize those files if you wish.

Kris, I didn't notice any time machine questions here prior to the migration. are you confronted with other options and choices before the move? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auDuUZlgMkg

My Mini should be arriving before weeks end and I'm preparing a nice "little" spot for it.

The 24" Samsung T240HD monitor doesn't have height issues, it's lower than the emac.

Will the snow leopard upgrade be additional dvd's or a software download?

I can't remember at what point I got a request to use a drive for Time Machine but it may only have come up because I have three drives in the Mac that was being upgraded at the time. It may have seen all three and asked if I wanted to use one for Time Machine but I don't remember the details. It may also have been at a later point in the process. Sorry, brain is foggy on that.

Snow Leopard most likely will be on DVD as this is in the fine print:

That would avoid a lot of the server problems they have when they offer something new. smile.gif

I'll keep my eyes open for time machine, i don't need more complication than I suspect I'll have when moving from panther to leopard. I envision much of my software needing an upgrade, and nonfunctional until that happens. I do have some reassurances but there's so much more software on board.

DVD's would be better. I first thought it was a mere upgrade, probably because of the name.wink.gif
