Camera on the iPod Nano?
« on: September 11, 2009, 07:05:05 AM »
I'm surprised there isn't a topic about the introduced camera on the iPod Nano... but that might just be because nobody really cares about that?

Honestly, I have no idea why you would do that?
So now you make moves with your iPod Nano while you probably have a cell phone doing exactly the same thing these days.
I did not see any result in quality yet but even if it's better than your average cell phone... why?
Oh wait... now you can actually make a movie of your run cycle while listening to music (can you do that together?).

Apple felt the market for video, as the Flip is in is excitting and worth getting in to.

Euhm... OK...

I still don't get it.

If the iPod Nano is to become absolete in technology, than wouldn't it be better to focus on the releasing proper technology on hardware that does have a future?
I'm not even saying that the Nano is to become absolete, just that it might be a way of thinking.
Still... not sure if a camera would help.

The Nano doesn't even come close to the video capabilities that the iPhone/iPod Touch has onboard so why put it there?

You can't get an iPhone with much video memory space for $150 and not have to sign a two-year contract and possibly change cell phone carriers. It doesn't seem to add any costs and provides a new feature. Who says every product has to incorporate every new or even existent technology to be worth while putting it in? dntknw.gif While I agree, it doesn't do anything for me, some one must think there is some kind of market... wink.gif More than likely, very young teenagers! smile.gif I hope You Tube has lots of server space... rolleyes.gif

Note - the iPod Touch doesn't have either a still or video camera. There were lots of people hoping for one, but it didn't happen. Jobs said in the interview with David Pogue (I linked to that in the event thread) that the still camera technology was too big to put in a Nano, or in the iPod Touch. Apple is positioning the Touch more as a gaming device. The iPhone is larger/thicker than the Touch and has room for both the video and camera.

And I'm with both of you - it doesn't do anything at all for me to have a video camera in the Nano. To me, what is far more significant (and got far less "airplay") is the inclusion of an FM tuner. Lots of people have said they bought non-Apple MP3 players because iPods didn't have FM. I've yet to hear of anyone who bought something else because the Nano didn't have video.

Time will tell.

OK, I'll be watching for the next issue. Groaner.gif

At least one of the sites I visited today mentioned that iFixIt had disassembled a new touch and found that space had been 'blocked off' the exact same size as the nano's video camera. But, as you said, neither is think enough for the focusing mechanism of the cameras in iPhones. The company also said the router/wifi chip was capable of FM reception but there is no antenna in them nor did there seem to be any free connection point to plug one in. dntknw.gif I guess two out of three of us are not in their market demographics? Fine by me! rofl.gif

But it is an interesting question, nonetheless, Marcel.

Jim, the antenna for the FM tuner in the Nano is the earphone wires. So, I think it would be the same for the Touch. Weird that they haven't enabled that capability...

In the future one should be able to purchase a data stick to plug into a USB port for cellphone, 3G, and wifi access.
the ipod nano has a mic and speaker built in, all it would need is the accessory from any cellphone carrier. wink.gif

Well, it made sense to me, from a marketing standpoint.

If Apple had put a camera into the Touch right now it would pretty much knock Nano sales way down. They needed something to boost that product and adding the video, FM, microphone and pedometer is a throw out to the youth market. Now all the parents will be pestered for Christmas/Hannukah to get their kiddies a new Nano. And the price point is low enough that older kids can probably buy their own. This configuration works well for the YouTube generation as well as students who can record lectures and share other digital info. The small size makes it really easy to have on hand and I would surmise it is rather profitable to produce.

IMO, part of Apple's success (and frustration for many of us) is the way it never seems to include all the features we want in one product. Instead it will have a few versions that appeal to slightly different segments and those who aren't quite satisfied with one piece of Apple hardware will just have to buy another. Incremental adjustments/improvements means there is a future guaranteed for these items at least in the near term. Once the sales of the Touch start to show weakness, Apple will find space for a camera in the shell.

I agree kris, have a look at this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyy2GWKXzgA

this is an old ipod with no mic, the new one solves the problem ...you see... now someone could plug in their T-Mobile stick or something new and phone out. There is also some rumblings about skype.

I was hoping for this option in the larger model with a 5 mp camera but I can wait. wink.gif

But I already get 'signals' via my teeth! Why would I need another 'antenna?! And which way would the signals be going, anyway? To the iPod or your head! eek2.gif laughhard.gif

Yeah Jim,  but as annoying as it is as a customer, I'm OK with it as a stockholder.  toothgrin.gif

How many stockholders does it take to keep a company profitable? Ar they the most important people for a company to keep happy? Especially a wildly profitable company? One with multi millions of cash laying around?

I'm happy that you are getting to see a price increase on any stock you own. I own some myself. But the power of stockholders on boards of directors (as well as most upper level management) is, IMHO, way more than it should be. Some boards border on being guilty of fraudulently bad performance or negligence of duty.

Perhaps, the new nano will be better able to record this kind of behavior! laughhard.gif

I don't think Apple panders to its stockholders. If it did it would have bought back large volumes of its stock when it had fallen to the recent lows, thereby raising the value of the outstanding shares.. It could also decide to pay out a dividend, but it isn't doing that either.

Nor did you see them coming forth with any additional news about Steve's health when the stock dumped due to speculation on his condition. There was all kinds of clamoring for information to stall the Apple freefall that was occurring in the market.

The Apple board at the stockholders' meeting each spring has also been less than receptive to ballot measures that would allow more input by holders or demand more output from the Apple board.

No, I think they are merely trying to earn as much cash as possible to secure a strong position in the tech industry. Someday they will use that pile of dough to make or buy something big. Who knows what that will be?  dntknw.gif

Here's a couple of Dilbert cartoons that I thought might bring back some levity:
