At 65 yrs. of age, I have to admit that I've become somewhat of a "Scrooge", when it comes to Christmas music; I mean,
really, how many times can you listen to "Jingle Bells" or "Santa Clause is coming to town" before you become unhinged?
So, I was completely flabbergasted at myself, when I found myself buying Tori Amos's "Midwinter Graces". It is an astoundingly gorgeous compilation of Christmas ("Holiday" for the PC crowd!) songs with brilliant instrumentation and orchestration. Tori's keyboard ability is amazing, as is the sound of her Bosendorfer 11' grand with an extra octave in the bass. . . She does an amazing job of creating a magical, musical environment for the season. Warning: right smack in the middle of this production, for some odd reason, she dropped in a big band arrangement of a "torch song"; kind of like something that you'd expect off a Sinatra disc. It's very well done, but doesn't seem to "fit" with the rest of the disc, however, it may be one of the 2 "bonus" cuts that you get with the Border's edition. Happy listening, y'll!
