Skype and eMacs
« on: November 17, 2009, 10:26:11 PM »
Okay, I know I asked about Skype before ... but here I am again. I don't know anything about Skype, nor am I knowledgeable about eMacs. Our friend has an older eMac, running 10.2 and he wants to run Skype. He's been looking for the OS upgrade discs, but has only found really pricey ones. The local Mac shop said they'd come out, install the upgrades and set up Skype, but they want even bigger bucks than everyone else.

So I guess I'm asking:
  • Can you run Skype on an eMac?
  • What's the minimum system needed on the eMac?
  • Any ideas where to find the OS upgrade, without paying an arm and a leg, for an eMac?
  • Any other advice we can give him?

I don't think the hardware is the problem, assuming it has the "horsepower" (G4, G5, 800 MHz or faster.) for some of the older versions of Skype. But even those versions required Panther (10.3). <Here's the info for the latest version which obviously won't run on 10.2.>

Also, here's some interesting posts on two different forums specifically asking the same question as yours.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system

I've got a 1.2GHz eMAC that's running 10.4.11 and I'm pretty sure it should run the regular audio portion of Skype (I'll try it out if you want); I'm not sure about the video extensions (if that's the word).

Thanks for the links, ABD. We passed them on to our friend and he'll take it from there.

Gunug, thanks. Not sure it would help though as he's still running 10.2 and looking for the upgrade CDs/DVDs.
