Bluetooth adapter recommendation?
« on: February 24, 2010, 06:22:39 PM »
I am considering getting an Apple Magic Mouse, having been very impressed when I tried it at an Apple store. Unfortunately, my computer is not equipped with Bluetooth and will require an adapter. OWC has   these adapters for sale. Does anyone have experience with one of them, or can recommend an alternative?

I ran the:
IOGear Bluetooth USB Adapter, for $27.99
till my G4 burned up and had no problems with it,
I used it to transfer info and photos from my cell phone.
So many Mac’s, so little time!

Thanks for the input. I like the Mighty Mouse but the scroll wheel's tendency to become clogged is a definite minus. On the other hand, having to change batteries in the Magic Mouse is also a minus. Apple recently replaced my Mighty Mouse and the new one is working fine so I'll probably wait a bit before springing for anything different.

Mighty Mouse scroll wheel clogging problem solutions:
    1. Wear a glove (white is more elegant)
    2. Wash the mouse hand often (washing the other hand is optional)
    3. Cut the finger off a surgical glove (you'll actually get ten 'finger-gloves' from each pair)
    4. Try to use alternate fingers (record which one is used the most and try to vary the pattern)
    5. Hold the mouse upside down all the time (although it will now start picking up dirt from the surface it is rolling on)
    6. Teach your snake to clean it
    7. Set aside 30 seconds every two months and clean it like everyone else does. It's the best mouse I've ever used!
But I'd probably buy a wired Magic Mouse if they made one. smile.gif

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES

And the United States = The Banana system

I like #6.   toothgrin.gif   I totally agree about buying a wired Magic Mouse if Apple ever makes one.

The battery life for the Magic Mouse is a little disappointing - my Logitech mouse survives months (3? 4?) on 2 AAAs. I've also read conflicting reports on whether or not the Magic Mouse will run well on rechargeable batteries. Apple says yes, but I've also read that it needs the full 1.5V provided by the alkaline batteries, vs. the 1.2 typical of the rechargeable batteries. I do know I had issues with a Kensington mouse that I tried to use with rechargeable batteries - after about 3 days it began to behave very erratically, and I wasn't about to charge the batteries every 3 days!!

I think I'll wait and see if Apple improves the battery life on the mouse before I run off to get one. The reports are generally not good, though most people like the mouse itself. (Those of us with small hands may appreciate it more wink.gif )

I just wrote to Apple, requesting that they make a wired version of the Magic Mouse. Anyone else who cares to do so can do it at Mac OS X Feedback.

Jon:   I have a brand new still in the box D-link USB Bluetooth Adapter which I purchased for my now gone Imac G5.  I was going to use a wireless mouse and kbd but never got around to it before the Mac suffered a fatal  motherboard heart attack.  If you have any interest I am sure we could find some common ground like shipping cost and a cuppa coffee or something like that.   PM Me if interested

Wow! Thanks for the offer but MacManiac in this FineTunedMac thread beat you to it. The generosity of the Mac community is really wonderful and greatly appreciated.  thumbup.gif
