Crashing -- again
« on: March 01, 2010, 06:32:18 PM »
Both yesterday and today, I've had the same type of crash that I had back in Jan (see this thread). The crash log reads the same as the one from Jan, as far as I can tell (but I can paste it here for someone to read). Yesterday I was able to force a shut down by using the button on the back, today I had to unplug the computer from the power backup.

Now I'm starting to be really concerned and wonder what I should troubleshoot, and how I'd do so -- and how concerned should I be???

For the record, I had the following running:
MacJournal 4.1.3
Little Snitch 2.0.4
iClip version 4
Typinator 3.1
MenuCalendar Clock 2.75

No Internet apps, no major programs - just these 5 items.

Kimmer, post the crash log - it might help.

Have you installed ANYTHING new lately?

Drat...started a reply, went off to look for something and somehow closed the window. Sigh. However, didn't find much - other people with crashes that look similar to yours, yes - but no solutions.

I'd start with the usual - repair permissions, run DU, run the Hardware Test if you have that disk, try checking your RAM (Rember - http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15837 ), clean caches, and perhaps toss the .plist files of any application that was open at the time of the crash.

This IS a crash/freeze you're seeing - NOT a kernel panic, correct? (Kernel panics look different in the logs) Complete freezes are fairly rare these days - which makes me think it's something in your system that's freezing, but the cause could be a bit of third party software. One crash log I saw that looked remarkably like yours was the result of a game that wasn't playing nicely with the GeForce driver, and I suspect that one of those apps may be the culprit. (The forum thread where I found the log appeared to be a couple of game developers/beta testers discussing what had caused the crash that looked like yours)

Also - how much RAM do you have in this iMac? Can you give us its specs?

I'll work on all of those later today.

Don't mean to sound dumb, but how do I know the difference? This always happens after I've left the machine for several hours, and when I return the screen is dark and I hit either the mouse or a key and I see a black screen with 1 or 2 dots of color. If I hit the keyboard command for "force quit", I will see the force quit button pop up through the black, but clicking it doesn't do anything. Today I was able to click the mouse and get portions of the desktop to show through the black. But that's all the response I get.

Processor: 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (and it's the RAM that came installed on the machine)

Ran Rember and all RAM passed.

FYI, a crash-freeze usually means that either a program or the whole computer becomes unresponsive. For information about a kernel panic, read About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages.

Try the SMU reset described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767?viewlocale=en_US

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1093348

Worked for a couple of people - let's hope it works for you, Kimmer!!

Similar problems:

http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-des...html#post857561 - no solutions suggested.

And now for the maybe not good news:

http://boardreader.com/thread/Imac_G5_scre...7dvnX1b7qo.html
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=653884 (and the last poster who says "the guy at the store" needs to refresh his Mac knowledge is correct!)
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1409812 (lots of people with similar issue - Eulipion's post at end of first page suggests hardware failure as well)

Thanks, Jon and Paddy. Let's hope it's not a hardware issue as there isn't a Mac store anywhere nearby (that I'd trust - thank you so much).

I don't know where I got the idea this was an iMac G5...

Here's info that will be relevant to your iMac:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 (directions for your iMac at bottom of article - click and they will be revealed)

A long thread about same issue - I've not read past the first page as I need to go out right now, but might help:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1865282

Power management .plist files may be corrupt.
