If you type in "copyright symbol" into google you end up with this:

http://www.copywriting-on-demand.com/quick-keys.htm

This seems to be a good resource for things "copywrit" (if that is a proper usage, I'm sure that the author of the website could tell us)! Thinking.gif

But JB; I'm too poor to buy that! smile.gif

But how about this:
QUOTE

Mac OS X character map

While looking for a character to place into Illustrator today, I noticed that the Keycaps character map utility is no longer to be found in OS X Panther (10.3). Poking around in Google, I found that this function is now handled through the Keyboard Viewer palette. getting this to show up takes a few steps though.

First, open System Preferences and show the International settings.

Second, select the Input Menu tab and check the Keyboard Palette checkbox. Check the menu box that reads "Show input menu in menu bar".

Now you will notice an icon in your system's top menu bar, probably the U.S. flag. This the input menu. When you click on the menu you can select "Show Keyboard Viewer" and the palette will open, allowing you to select a font and hold down Option, Shift, Command keys to view keyboard combinations.

I'm too tired right now to check this out but I will in the morning; it might be for a pre-10.4 OS:

QUOTE
I know this is a bit of a long way to do this same thing. But in case you want to see the Character Palette or view the Keycaps you can find these programs buried in the System Library. You can then make Aliases to them to bring them up whenever, they're locations:
Keyboard Viewer (keycaps)
/System/Library/Components/KeyboardViewer.component/Contents/SharedSupport/KeyboardViewerServer.app

The Character Palette App should be in that same directory.

The differences might be that you have to do a key-combination to get the same result that is just embedded by Pop Char X JB!

A few days ago I was typing in a Word document and typed © & it turned into a ©. Since I really need the ©, I did a back space & it remained correctly.

In Snow Leopard: System Prefs/Keyboard/Keyboard (seems to default to Keyboard Shortcuts)… check "Show Keyboard and character viewer in menu bar" (below the 'sleep' timer bar). No mention of international settings.

The icon is no longer a flag - on mine it looks like a screen with an asterisk and two vertical rows of four dots next to it. No idea what it's meant to represent!

Tom: Whatever it was you typed comes out as a © on my screen anyway - so what did you type... smile.gif

I have a "suspicion" (not unlike Joan Fontaine had about Cary Grant in the 1941 Hitchcock classic of the same name) that it all lines up around what the printer "sees" and will print out!  If you have the correct font loading and it correctly supports what you are using in your APP and the OS then you can expect the printer to spit out whatever you want it to spit out!

This is an artists misconception of a printer printing your applications output: getsick.gif

Otherwise the phrase "Garbage In, Garbage Out" may have a real world meaning!

The printer will print what it 'sees' on your screen...if the printer is attached to your computer/LAN (usually). But if that printer is completely separated from your device, it will only know what the font is if it is included in the file info. And, if the font doesn't include the character you wanted, you'll just get whatever their OS uses for an unidentified character. I'm sure you've seen those in emails and even web pages/blogs. Every character in any one language uses the same 'code' for the same letter, but every font does not always have the same characters.

PopCharX is much. much more than a simple "character inserter." Without getting into ones personal 'economy,' I have got much more than my monies worth out of the small price. clap.gif Much easier to justify that price than for Photoshop, for me, anyway. rofl.gif

XABD - Don't get me started on CS products; I have to stop mentioning buying CS(?) to my older son because he thinks it is too expensive at whatever the price.  He's using Office 2003 and has MS Publisher instead of using the software that he "learned" to use in college.  He can still get a student license as he's just started Law School and intends to convert some ill gotten scholarship money into a laptop (I'm pulling for a MACBOOK) so he "could" buy a copy of CS(?) Suite but my lips are sealed on the subject! taped.gif

While I think I saw it "free" as part of some bundled software; I believe all signs point to it being $36 and change.  I'm sure I could use it for free for awhile but I'm thinking it wouldn't be fair to the author of the software if I did that. I think the "simplicity" or duplicity of the Windows XP operating system where you type in ALT-??? (where the question marks are a three digit code number) and get what you ask for has lead me astray.  Simplicity wins!   cheer.gif

I didn't notice the post when I added the reply, but I typed Parentheses c Parentheses (without the spaces). Even TS changed it to ©.

John! Are you OK? Looks like just talking/writing about "CS" caused an attack! rofl.gif

As for PopChar, I won't say I use it every day, even. But when I need it, it's right there in the upper, left-hand corner of the screen. It's never failed me, always has what I need, already knows what font I have and if the character is in there (of course, Character Pallet does those two things), and inserts it and disappears as soon it can. But I can also search for a character and see what it looks like in every font I have installed, as I said, all fonts don't have the same characters. The handiest feature is the list of frequently used characters and there is no real limit on how many can be listed/shown. There is a lot going on under this little app. And I don't think I've been asked to pay for more than one update since I purchased it many, many years ago. Wish I could say the same for FileMaker... wallbash.gif

Windows may be able to give you the ASCII code for those 256 characters, but the world of text is well beyond that limit. NTML has been using Unicode since 4.0. Various OSs use one of several Unicode variants/subsets. Even Windows NT (Windows 2000 and later) uses UTF-16. While most fonts have the majority of the 256 "characters," Helvetica, alone, has 688 in just the basic Latin set! And that doesn't include the 185 General Punctuation, 85 Number and 25 Currency "characters!" Even the term "character" is invalid when speaking of these new codes, The organization that works on the codes doesn't even define the term! eek2.gif

XABD - That was the perfect example of a Don't Loop!  This is a computer language construct that you say Don't Do something.  In my case I have my Do Loop set to roll over to a function that tells me "don't mess with Texas."  This is in honor of  Texas Mac Man and certain others of the Texas persuasion!  Just pretend  you are floating down the Guadalupe River in an inner tube:

In my case I'm stuck in the innertube loop because it's so funny.  This is why  it  is  termed an endless loop!   toothgrin.gif whistling.gif
