Rights and Responsibility
« on: July 05, 2010, 08:19:45 PM »
I shouldn't be too excited by this topic and I don't expect anyone else to have an opinion on the subject!  laugh.gif

This was in another thread and I just placed it so I'm going to move it here:

QUOTE
I have an older son who begins Washburn University Law School next month and while I'm very proud of him I'm going to spend some hours over the next few years in conversations about where personal responsibility begins and ends.  This past weekend we had just such a conversation about legal aspects of rights and responsibility in
an "SOB" (sexually oriented business (this is what the newspaper calls it) ) law that hasn't "yet" made it's way through the Kansas Legislature (there are some lawyers there that XABD could at least give a good booting to if "Capital Punishment" seems to be going too far).  whistling.gif The nature of the conversation will remain strictly in camera!

I am also still simmering slightly over this evenings television triage of the number of children injured in fireworks related accidents (10 in Lawrence on the 4th of July, 2010) and I then heard from a fireworks seller who declared the safety of her fireworks if used under adult supervision.  The accident of the night seemed to involve some sort of small explosives that work by dropping them or throwing them on the ground.  A girl was injured while trying to place these little explosives around in a bowl and I will not be surprised if a lawsuit is sought by the parents.  I would except the validity if the parents used the proceeds to fix the child medically; and maybe the remainder could be placed into an education fund or something of that sort. Thinking.gif The child had no responsibility (this is the definition of childhood) and while the parents are to blame (as much as I feel for them) there is something to be said for a lawsuit in this case.  If a child dies in similar circumstances I would be very unhappy to serve on the jury! wallbash.gif

Later: Done simmering and have eaten
ice cream; go Ichabods!

As it is the 5th of July, 2010 and I'm on a roll I'd like to start the Summer 2010 Rights and Responsibility Seminar with this:

http://www.knowzy.com/Personal_Finance/Cre...rds_In_Mail.htm

Two divisions of HSBC bank (who knows what it stands for) have sent out pre-activated debit cards in the USPS (United States Postal Service) one would assume and I'm sorry if it's "leave it on the doorstep" UPS instead.  If this careless lack of responsibility doesn't seem to be stepping on your rights then see whether your billfold or purse are still on the premises!  What do you think of this; or are you too upset but some other idiocy to come out and say anything. Devilish2.gif I seem to have fallen off my soapbox!

Well, I'll bet HSBC loses a bunch of customers with that procedure. eek2.gif

Re fireworks... our local news had the unpleasant duty this weekend of reporting about a 36 year old guy who had his arm blown off at the shoulder by a rocket he was setting off in the street. There is no end to idiocy. rolleyes.gif

<The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, headquartered in London, United Kingdom since 1993.> Are there now laws against fraud by large corporations?! I thought that was taken care of when the Supreme Courts allowed them to give as much money as they wanted to politicians! dntknw.gif "If it's good for the company, it's good for the country!" I was just listening to John Hartford's salute to "Mouth to Mouth Resuscitation" and if it's good for the country it's good for the nation as well! smile.gif

I could diagram this for you but I'm sure that you can understand it without the diagram! wink.gif

Don't know about Mr. Hartford, but I was being sarcastic, with tongue-in-cheek...

I am now just on a little bit of a boil about Russian Spy Suspects and pleading their cases:

QUOTE
The 10 long-term sleeper agents pleaded guilty to conspiracy before a federal judge in Manhattan after revealing their true identities. All 10 were sentenced to time served and were to be transferred to Russian custody as part of a deal in which Moscow will release the four Russian prisoners, three of whom were serving long sentences after being convicted of treason for spying.

I'm just no sure enough of who to be the maddest at to boil over!

Any else see anything in the media that is irksome without getting painfully political?

Our Federal laws probably forbids allowing any foreigner to be deported until being convicted and sentenced. The deal had been cooking for quite some time. I suspect early last Winter when it became known that the three spies were available for 'transfer.' It then required only that 'we' come up with something in exchange. Apparently, the FBI has known about these 10 for many years, so they were a natural choice.

I'm not sure what the 'boiling' might be about unless you feel that these 10 people actually provided something of value to the Russians that they couldn't have determined by reading the Wall Street Journal. Perhaps it is difficult to get subscriptions in Russia? Or the shipping delays were to great for their patiences? wink.gif

Frankly, the sentences for the three 'spies' were much longer and I don't think the prison conditions in Russia would be nearly as comfortable as in the USoA. So, I'm glad that they are free to return here and/or England.
