Using DiskWarior from a clone won't work!
« on: July 08, 2010, 06:05:37 AM »
I depend a lot on DiskWarrior. However, I tried to apply DW to the boot drive by opening the clone and running DW form there.(I am trying to avoid having to run DW from its disk.) However, that won't work! When one clones a boot drive, the clone shares some files with the clone. Therefore, DW tries and fails to unmount the boot drive thinking that it it must unmount the clone. To solve this I have created a bare boot volume on my system and moved DW in it. Now, I can  run DW from the bare system without any conflicts.

I regularly run DW 4.2 from my clone. It goes very fast and without incident. Which version of DW do you have and which OS are you using?

Another thought:  Which cloning app do you use? Mine is SuperDuper 2.6.2. SD does not copy certain files that Apple recommends against copying.

I could see either of you or both of you being right or wrong about this! dntknw.gif It depends upon what you're trying to do when you're saying it won't work.  I have used an older copy (circa OS 10.2-3) and a really older copy (OS 9.2 days) and both of them would function to some degree in a sort of current (G4-G5).  I've booted and run on newer Intel machines.  I don't install Diskwarrior normally because what it does doesn't require installation and can run from a boot optical drive.  I'm getting tired of standing on this fence!

Often aliases on the new clone can be accessing the original content on the initial drive. Sometimes Spotlight will by trying to index the old drive.  The latter can be solved by putting the drive in the exceptions list in Spotlight.

This article suggests using the Finder's EJect on the main drive while booted from the clone or dragging it to the Trash.

Doing a Safe Boot can also disable any third party apps that may be running and accessing the original.

Here's a thread at the SuperDuper site that suggests running a Smart Update from the original first, reboot to clone.

This isn't what I thought it was about; I have, I am sure, run Diskwarrior on a system (Intel) over in one of my High School journalism labs that are all cloned drives (using SuperDuper).  It ran and told me the Windows partition was present but "not bootable" when I couldn't even find it otherwise.  It didn't fix the problem but changing over from Boot Camp did!  I probably didn't use the right strategy in the first place or boot camp might have worked!  Too soon old, too late smart; that's me all over!

I think my problem is that I use Carbon Cipy Cloner for all my clones. From what I understand from the group, SuperDuper! doesn't have this problem.

I suspect you are Mamamoose, Superduper has other aggravations, but apparently not that particular one. wink.gif

Maybe it's just my limited usage of SD, but I have not had problems with it. Which problems are you referring to?

How could I be so confused; of course you aren't MamaMoose; you are "jchuzi" because if you were MamaMoose you'd be talking to yourself! Trying to be funny here; I think I meant to say:

And the "aggravations" alluded to are? dntknw.gif
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system
CAUTION! Childhood vaccinations cause adults!

I'm sure that there are some beyond the "aggravation" of reading what I've typed!
