The Corning Museum of Glass

I am sitting in a cool  and comfortable hotel room in Painted Point NY.  My wife and I decided to take a quick vacation to visit the Corning Museum of Glass after she finished teaching in June.  Several friends had raved about their visit there and as we are both avid museum and art gallery fans our curiosity was piqued.  I must say that our friends were spot on, it has more than exceeded our expectations.  We were unable to explore/see it all in one day so we are returning tomorrow. So if you are ever in the Corning NY area make sure to visit the Corning Museum of Glass.

BTW, as expected our American hosts have been wonderful. friendly, polite, helpful, gracious, couldn't have a nicer next door neighbour.

My Dad and I visited there when I was in college in the late 60's.  I'm sure the exhibits are much more extensive now but I fondly remember watching the glassblowing and other demonstrations.  

Tell me, do they still have either a telescope or periscope that you can look through to the area outside from a high vantage point in one of the buildings?  My Dad reminds me of the scare I gave him when I was looking through the lens. He asked what I could see and I told him "...the parking lot, your car and .... oh, there's someone breaking into it!"  

Of course I was kidding but he believed me for a couple seconds.  Today, it's a family joke.

My stepdad is a retired physicist who has worked mainly as an optical engineer (working with optics and for NASA).  He has been to this museum a number of times and keeps trying to get me to make a trip to Corning, NY.  His only brother lives right outside of Corning so he has been there a lot!  I don't know of any special events or anything but I'm sure such things exist!

I'll second Johan's suggestion.

Many year's ago, when client work in Binghamton kept me in NY over a weekend, I visited the museum, and a rewarding experience it was. Fascinating history of glass, including the oldest glass object yet discovered . . . 1000s of years old.

On a second occasion, I went to the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown for a very different, but also rewarding, experience. Also in Cooperstown, the NY Agricultural museum consisting of entire buildings and equipment purchased from NY farms throughout the State, representing over 200+ years of rural life and work. Remarkable.


PS: (for gunug) That was the "old" NASA, I presume, rather than the new one – Nurturing Arabs' Self Assurance
