I only use Image Capture to import my photos. Just give it a default location to put them and you'll have a nicely named folder almost as fast as you can connect the cable to the camera. Then, do whatever you want with the images, after all, their your images, not Apple's or iPhoto's.

And I don't have a problem with Faces, it's the names I can't remember! blush-anim-cl.gif rofl.gif

Oh, Image Capture!
Never used it, I should try it. Will it let you scroll thru all of your pix and perhaps play a slide show with music?
Thanks,
Jane

No, but you can do that in Finder. dntknw.gif Image Capture is designed to...uhm...capture images by sucking them off a camera or scanner and placing them on your hard drive. It comes with the OS and has for several versions, getting more powerful each iteration.

How to do that with Finder?
Image capture sure sounds good.

iPhoto is wonderful when it works properly, I just imported 10630 photos into a new library, and it worked!
BUt now I have too many libraries, I need to know which ones are the ones to use and delete.
Arrrrgggghhh, why does it have to be so darn time consuming!?

I assume Jim means using Quick Look (the fourth view option in the Finder) for a slideshow. You can also use Preview. If you want music, just start up iTunes...

Instructions for Preview:

To view a slideshow of images:

Open the first image in Preview.

Choose View > Sidebar.

Drag the other images from the Finder to the sidebar.

Select the first image.

Choose View > Slideshow.

Actually I use Preview a lot for this, but not for a group of more than 1000 for a slide show. Its nice to start an iPhoto slide show and have it go on for an hour or so.
There are so many great options!
I did completely resurrect my 2004 to 2008 pictures into a new album last night.
Now I have to figure out how to delete the defunct libraries.
I sure am learning how to deal with this stuff, tis the first time on any of my Macs, that iPhoto has screwed up anything.

Found that this is the only album which is trying to do "Faces" which I do not want to have.  It is trying to ID faces, and I cannot disable it. The other 3 albums dont do this. I wonder if this is part of the trouble.

To be clear, the exclamation point has nothing to do with Faces. It means that the original photo can not be located. Either somehow the original photo has been deleted or renamed, or oyu may have disk directory damage that needs to be repaired.

When you see this, control-click on the exclamation point. From the popup menu that appears, choose the Show File command. What happens when you do that?

I went back to that defunct library, and control-clicked upon that huge exclamation point, it just went back to the thumbnail. No menu showed up.

Interesting that the original photos could not be located by iPhoto, they are all there, I created a new library from the old one and this one is named iPhoto, recreated library.
It now works fine, though I would love to be able to get rid of the old ones. When I open iPhoto and hold down the option key, I can choose the new libraries.

All the pictures are there on my hard drive thank god!

Looked up how to disable Faces, it only grinds away on a couple of my iPhoto libraries, not on all of them.  Listening to my hard drive chug looking for faces, which I do not use, is not what I want. I saw this as an annoying feature on a few forums too.

Thank you for explaining this! I tried to fix the thumbnail database or whatevertheycallit, and that didnt work either, I just took the folders of old photos and dragged them into a new iPhoto.
