Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day (Canadian French: Jour de l'Action de grâce), occurring on the second Monday in October, is an annual Canadian holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. Although the original act of Parliament references God and the holiday is celebrated in churches, the holiday is also celebrated in a secular manner.

Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, currently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation to give thanks to God.


A very happy thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians.  I won't bore you with the details but I hope you have as much to be thankful for as I do.  

And I have every confidence that the Alouettes will avenge the butt kicking they got last week.  Welcome to Molson stadium Calgary.

Is turkey "really" what you guys have for your Thanksgiving?  Do you stuff it with something different or have a "nice" selection of side dishes and such that would be unrecognizable to me. . .like when I first started going to my in-laws for Thankgiving and had them ask me how to make oyster dressing like my grandma's (soda crackers, onions and smoked oysters, what recipe)?  smile.gif  Just wondering Johan!

Sounds like the Canadian Thanksgiving would equate to the "harvest festival" held in churches over here. Likewise, it originated as thanks for a successful growing season. There's no set day and no holiday, it's held in churches, of all denominations, though I think many schools still celebrate it.

The church is usually "dressed" - decorated with flowers - and members of the congregation bring in a gift of food, according to what they can spare/afford; anything from a small bag of flour to a basket of fruit or vegetables. Afterwards the gifts will be passed on to children's homes, homeless shelters, Salvation Army and other good causes.

As a change from Wikipedia, here is a junior school (7-11 years) site about the custom.
