Safari startup site
« on: October 29, 2010, 12:06:03 PM »
I have set up Safari (5.0.2, OS X 10.6.4) to clear out a bunch of stuff on closing.

And, before I close, I "Reset Safari" (see pic below)

then do a Command Q.

But every time I restart Safari, it always comes up with the last page active.

AND backing up brings up, in sequence, all the sites I visited on my previous session.

What gives, STEVE ????

I DON'T want my previous site visitations showing up after I have reset and quit S !!!!!!!

Anybody here have any solutions??? Besides suicide?  Devilish2.gif    wallbash.gif    thanx.gif

I'm guessing here, but if you don't HAVE a start/home page set for Safari it's grabbing the last one you had open. Try going into Safari preferences and setting an actual home page - whatever you want it to be.

Well, the start up page is the easiest, just assign it in the prefs. I don't even have a web-based page listed, just a small html file that's on my drive. It is always available and has a couple of external site graphics. So, if those don't show up, I don't have to wonder what the problem and long delay is, I know immediately that my interweb connection is down.

Likewise, you can have the History cleared by setting a pref for that to "1 day." Same works for RSS pages, if you use Safari for that.

Cache cleaning is rather ill-defined, IMHO, in Safari. What I have done is to set the "Database storage" to "None" in the Security part of the prefs. My reason is to force Safari to reload everything while I am making changes/edits to our web site.

So, it would appear to me that, if youy can leave some stuff on the computer for maybe 24 hours, you can simply cease and desist using the "Reset Safari" item. dntknw.gif Of course, that doesn't answer your question, exactly. For the answer,
    1. I'd suggest simply moving the ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and restarting Safari. If that file is rebuilt, see if your "normal" cleaning shutdown works.
    2. Do the same for the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist.
Hopefully, one or both rewritten list will correct the bad behavior. If not, put those two files in the corner and tell them they will get no Supper! nono.gif

What the heck is so hard about that?

And why in the .......... won't Safari clear the things I tell it to????????

Come on , Steve

Always surf in "PRIVATE" mode? I believe you'd have to turn it on each time, but it might solve your problem.

Jack, have you set it to "New windows open with...blank page" ? It's in the Safari general preferences. Worked exactly as advertised when I just tried it now. Safari opens with a blank page and any new pages open with a blank page too. I left my Home page set - but that will only show up if I click on the Home icon. (now I'll change it back...I LIKE my home page, which is a carefully selected bunch of RSS feeds on a Yahoo page)

If none of this is working for you, then I do think your preference files are corrupt.

Zilch nada crap

no matter what I do, it always comes up with the last site ivisited in the previous session.

i even went so far as removing the plist files , no joy

i even used TM to retrieve plist files from a couple of weeks ajgo — no help

now im wondering if it is one of the addons

glims 1.0 b26,
cookies 1.6.2,
safari adblocker 1.9.8.6 (it doesn't seam to be working anyway - well that did zilch),
incognito 1.0,
yutube5 2.0.0,
clicktoflash

And I guess this could serve as a reminder to everyone to tell us the whole story...? wink.gif Anyway, glad you found the problem, Jack. You should let the developers of Glims know, BTW. It also might be interesting to try it in a test account to see if you can reproduce the problem when it's on its own.

Quote Paddy: "And I guess this could serve as a reminder to everyone to tell us the whole story...? "

My question becomes: Is it possible for ANYONE to tell the "whole story" ????

With an almost infinite possible combination of the whole story, I think that would be quite difficult !

But I sure could have told a lot more, especially if I had known what caused the .... problem in the 1st place.

I will try glims in my other account if it will let me.
And report back as an addendum to this message.

FWIW

Jack
10:11 Edited to add:

Had to re-install in the non-priv account, behaved the same way - badly.

went into glims and found a whole bunch of on/off switches
turned the one of that said something about tabs
had to log out of and back into account, and all was ok.

BUT, when i logged back into my normal account, all on/off switches had disappeared ??????

Maybe I'd best dump it again and not toy with it until I understand it better.  ???

Anybody out there had any experience with glims care to talk about it???

Jack, I know it's probably not possible to tell the whole story in some cases (where things entirely unrelated cause issues) but it might have helped if you'd noted that you had a bunch of Safari add-ons. Might being the operative word! wink.gif It's a bit like people reporting system crashes/freezes and neglecting to mention that they have a bunch of haxies installed. I guess I should amend my statement to say "This could serve as a reminder to mention any modifications to the software/hardware in question that might be related to the issues in question"?

Of course, other than suggesting uninstalling those add-ons, I don't know what else we could have done, as I could find no references to the sort of problems you experienced and Glims. The only ones I have installed are AdBlock and ClicktoFlash, and neither appears to be causing any problems for me. Touch wood.

My apologies Paddy ! I did come on all-too-strong.

I went to MacUpdate and searched for glims. Description follow:

OK, where the blue-blazes did my ability to include a picture in my reply go??? (this session in firefox)

back to the drawing board!

Anyway one of the features: "Re-opens last session when Safari starts"

I guess that says it all.

SORRY STEVE - it wasn't your fault!
