iPhone 4 on Verizon

I still have not seen anything that addresses the cost of the "data plan".  I am betting the total package will be in the hundred buck a month range.

I would love to get one, but we have a "grandfathered" analog plan from Verizon that gives me 2 phones and 2  numbers, 300 minutes, and LD, for 44 bucks a months, text at .10 a pop (roaming really expensive so we have to be careful). A prepaid fone card usually solves that.  Probably wont move to the new one anytime soon.

I can relate, Daryl.  My wife would love to have a new iPhone.  The monthly fee is much more than I want to pay.

We too have an older plan but with AT&T.

It seems like there are more monthly fees these days than ever.

You don't usually have to 'take-it-or-leave-it' with AT&T or most other 'services.' But you do have to stand your ground. My wife actually enjoys dealing with these companies! She'll call them up and tell them we're taking our business to someone else unless they can reduce our costs or add something for nothing.

That can be difficult with ATT&T and an iPhone, of course. But you don't have to pay for texting (both ways, BTW! sad.gif ), you can simply block/remove it. That's what I've done. If people have something that's worth hearing/saying/writing, they have several 'free' options; email, phone call, etc. After all, they are holding in their hands a device that allows two-way communications at nearly the speed of light! Why pay for a garbled, difficult to read, one-way "message" that can be very dangerous to read and send?! doh.gif dntknw.gif

Unless Apple has made different deals with AT&T and Verizon, there should finally be some competition and resulting savings for consumers...when they can finally get out from under the multi-year contracts...but I doubt we'll see many "buy one and get one free" plans... rofl.gif I'm betting there has been some highly concentrated, contentious, possibly heated, closed-door meetings at both AT&T and Verizon for the past ~12 months.

There is a always going to be a newer model "just around the corner"...the iPhone 4 is a pretty amazing little beast, and if it does everything you want it to, then waiting to see what the next one does may not be worth it. Or it may. No way to tell.

That's one way to look at it.

The other is...ask yourself if you really need the iPhone and whether or not it will make you happy.

So far, I've been able to say "no" to the first (much as I love them - they are gorgeous pieces of technology) and "probably not" to the second. So, I putter along with my very capable cell phone - an LG Xenon. It has a nice touch screen and it has a slide out keyboard which makes texting much easier. I don't use it enough to justify a data plan or anything fancy.

I too am pretty good at bargaining with cable/phone companies. In the last two years I've reduced our overall bill significantly both years, and now pay a total of $162/mo. with taxes for HD cable TV with 2 digital boxes/PVRS (DVRs in the US), landline with 500 minutes North American Long Distance, 2 cell phones with 300 anytime minutes, early evenings and weekends free (6 pm on) 1000 anytime CDN long distance minutes, 1500 text messages (out, in doesn't count in Canada)/month and their next to top tier internet (25Mbps, though we're now getting an unadvertised 48, with 120GB /mo). That's after about $135 a month in discounts that I've managed to wrangle out of Rogers' retention dept.

You can always play the waiting game but then you'll never buy anything. A corollary of Murphy's Law is that the item that you just bought will go on sale within 5 minutes of your paying for it. A related corollary states that 10 minutes after you pay for it, a new, improved, cheaper model will be introduced.

There are two rules here:

1. You can't win.
2. If you think that you're winning, see rule 1.

25mps would cause our cable wires to smoke! eek2.gif I doubt we could get fire insurance if we had 48!!! WOW.gif

I was reading about jobs today, specifically which ones are in the highest demand. I did see it listed, but I'm positive that the cable rate/package creators are absolutely the most secure...second most would be the people airlines employ to come up with new fees! rant.gif Reminds me of a comedy skit about buy a pack of cigarettes:
"Will that be regular or king-sized?
    Menthol or non?
    Soft or hard pack?
    Low-tar?
    Filter or non?"
Never mind, just give me a cigar... rolleyes.gif

Despite the fact that the VZ iPhone will be good for my Apple stock, I'm not thrilled about it.

Why, you say?

Because my family is on Verizon and we have a ton of trouble getting connections and maintaining calls without being dropped.  All this despite the fact that we live in supposedly one of the most 'covered' areas according to the VZ maps.

I can only imagine how difficult it will be to make a call in the near future.  dry.gif

This is much the same for me...don't really download much data at all.

TexasMacMan: The article hits the nail on the head...What will the Verizon plan look like?

Kris: I can understand your frustration with the dropped calls and the supposed GREAT coverage.
Verizon hear in Central Ohio is not bad at all. AT&T on the other hand is why I never got an iPhone from them. There is no coverage in this area at all...Dick(RHPConsult) can attest to this.

After reading all your inputs...I think I'll wait.
