A new iMac for me!
« on: January 15, 2011, 01:57:44 PM »
Hi folks! Not posting much these days, but still "lurking" on a regular basis. (Life and work seem to be getting in the way.) Anyway, I bought myself (ok it's really for both my wife and me) a new shiny iMac. Bought it at the Apple Store in Cherry Hill, NJ. The sales staff was great--I already knew what I was buying, but I had a few questions about setting up the new Mac and my new time capsule. (Yeah, I finally ditched my old round AEBS, along with the eMac I was using.) Because my wife is eligible for an educator's discount, and I was eligible for a discount from my employer, I was quite happy when they took the time to go through each item from the iMac, the time capsule, some software, AppleCare, and even the firewire cable I needed, and used whichever discount gave the biggest savings for each item! I didn't even have to ask--they offered smile.gif thumbup.gif

I did the setup and transfer yesterday. I was amazed how perfect the setup assistant worked. Not one glitch. I had heard that could be issues going from a PPC to the Intel. But, there were none. I still had one or two questions about the wireless setup, etc., so before I did that change, I called Apple. Got a support guy within a couple of minutes, and he was great to deal with. His answers were clear, and he was not at all rushed with my questions.

Then, all was going so well, I decided to change my printer setup to a wireless network to make it easier for others. I got that done on my own with my Canon MP560--not too much work for the printer. But when I was stuck getting the scanner to work, I took a chance and called Canon support. Got a friendly knowledgeable woman--who was working in the Virginal area. (I like when they tell you where they are located.) She, too, was great. Knew enough about Macs so that I thought for a second she worked for Apple! Got it done in a few minutes, and stayed on to make sure that my wife's user accounts were all working properly.

All in all--kudos to Apple (again) and to Canon for great customer service. (And also to Apple for making this process so easy.) Is it just me, but isn't it cool when you turn on a new Mac for the first time and get the welcome screen and the music. Like that new car smell. smile.gif

A couple of IMacs, an iPad, a bunch of iPhones...two of which don’t live here, but I still pay for. Oh yeah, wife, daughters, and yes—a grandson!

Yes, the TINY keyboard, I had to trim my fingernails to the bone.

About Canon Scanning from Photoshop, I had an awful time setting it up, but finally succeeded. If you want to do this, and not just use Canon scan software, let me know. I think, sort of think, I can remember how I finally got it working.  Adobe didnt have the plug ins, they are TWAIN plug in replacements, not the ones that I downloaded and installed at first. They are newer and are the 'fix' to the problem with Canon wireless and Adobe.  If you Google for the answer, they will say it wont work. But if you dig into the bowels of Canons support pages, you will find it. The plug in looks exactly like the old one, but is different, you have to replace it.

Jane, Thanks for the offer. I have no need to scan from Photoshop. As I mentioned, the Canon support person had the wireless scanning working for me within minutes. I'd really suggest a call to their support line for anyone who needs help. I didn't get charged, but I think the recording said that it was $9.95 if there would have been a charge.

Who says you have to use a TINY keyboard? ! Don't you have one from the last Mac you had? As long as it's USB, use any that you want/have. wink.gif

The fingernails did the trick, they're really short now.
